When I was young, I remember my father loved to eat corn bread with buttermilk. (That might sound weird, but it was a West Texas specialty.) At about ten o’clock every night, he would walk into our kitchen and crumble a piece of corn bread into a glass of buttermilk.

Then he made the rounds to the front and back doors, making sure they were locked. Once everything was secure, he would step into the bedroom I shared with my older brother and say, “Everything is secure, boys. You can go to sleep now.”

Now, I know God probably doesn’t love buttermilk and corn bread like my dad did. But I know God loves His children. He looks out for you. He doesn’t need to check if the doors are locked because He is guarding the door. He protects you from worry and fear.

Listen carefully. Hear Him say, “Everything is secure. You can rest now.” With God’s help, you can be anxious for nothing. And you can have “God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it.”

I’m not so sure about the idea of crumbling cornbread into buttermilk, but this book sounds like it has some great ideas!

I loved the adult version of this Max Lucado book so I’m sure it would be awesome for a middle grade student.
