Becoming an Amish wife

is her only option…

Englischer Hannah Raber will do anything to protect her children when they are sent into witness protection—even marry her late husband’s brother. Learning to be an Amish wife is a big adjustment, especially since she’s determined to keep an emotional distance. But as her girls bond with Daniel, Hannah can’t help but wonder if strangers from different worlds can turn a convenient marriage into a forever love…

His Amish Wife’s Hidden Past by Mindy Steele combines some of my favorite story elements into a gentle romance with layered characters. I love reading about witness protection stories, Amish country, and marriage of convenience romances, so this latest novel by Steele checked all my boxes. Add in a few quirky animals and some adorable kids and I’m completely here for it.

Daniel Raber is a genuinely good guy – respectful, sincere, trustworthy, and selfless. I loved the way he stepped up to the plate to protect his estranged brother’s family and honored that promise, no matter the sacrifice to himself. Very swoonworthy! Magnolia / Hannah also has a good heart and is very likable, despite the rough hand life has dealt her – a series of trials that culminates with her husband’s violent death & an immediate remarriage to a stranger in order to keep her girls safe from her husband’s killers. Her daughters will capture your heart, even the oldest one who struggles the most to adjust to all the recent upheavals, and the mischievous goats will leave you chuckling.

I did find the circumstances of Daniel & Hannah’s hurried marriage to be a bit unrealistic for what is asked of each of them, but I definitely enjoyed watching them grow closer and develop feelings for each other. Moments of well-timed humor and dashes of suspense are woven throughout the romance, adding to the layers and allowing the characters to let their guard down as their affection builds. Daniel makes a wonderful stepfather to his nieces, and their sweet & often adorable scenes steal the show more than once. The author tackles Hannah’s tumultuous past with grace and compassion, and in doing so she points us to the Source of healing and forgiveness.

Bottom Line: His Amish Wife’s Hidden Past by Mindy Steele gives readers the best of several worlds in the land of romance tropes, with something for fans of Amish fiction, marriage of convenience, and witness protection. Even though this isn’t under the Love Inspired Suspense umbrella, there’s enough danger to give readers a few heart-in-your-throat moments, too.   And as Hannah & her girls adapt to this very new lifestyle, we get a little more insight into the Amish culture – a nice bonus! Sweet & swoony, this is a great choice for fans of Patricia Davids & Carrie Lighte.

I typically do not read Amish fiction. The witness protection and marriage of convenience aspects sounded interesting. I have a friend who adores Amish books. I bet she would really like this one!
