Professional organizer Nicki Mayfield is on her way to becoming the next Marie Kondo – if only she could find clients and make ends meet! While looking for new professional opportunities, Nicki’s also determined to sort out her personal life. Despite dealing with a mother who’s a prime candidate for Hoarders and battling her own doubts about marriage and parenting, Nicki is certain she can transform the chaos around her into order.

When all hope seems lost, the eccentric socialite Katherine O’Connor enters Nicki’s world. Boosted by Ms. O’Connor’s desperate need for organizing help, Nicki pushes out of her comfort zone — in work, love, and life. Together they discover an unknown Chinese address on a business card. Determined to uncover the identity of the address and how it connected with the father her client hardly knew, Ms. O’Connor and Nicki embark on an adventure that takes them across the world. There, both women must break down the walls surrounding their hearts to help those who can’t help themselves. In doing so, Nicki and Ms. O’Connor learn that things and people aren’t always what they seem, that hidden treasures lead to new beginnings, and that sometimes — surprisingly — God has things perfectly arranged.

Nicki Mayfield’s Shoe Organizing Playlist

by Liana George, author of Perfectly Arranged

Hi, Nicki Mayfield here! Since Liana’s busy preparing for the release of her debut novel (and my story), Perfectly Arranged, I thought I’d help her out and write today’s post here on Reading is My SuperPower.

While there are tons of fun things I could share about the book, I thought I’d focus on my life as a professional organizer a bit. Specifically, my favorite thing to organize … shoes!!

Like clothes, I love all the options available for arranging footwear – you can organize them by color, by brand, by style/type, by season, or even mix-it up. Honestly, the possibilities are endless! It really depends on the system that works best for you.

In the three years I’ve owned Save my Space Organizing, I’ve helped a lot of clients bring order to their closets, which is where most people keep their shoes. However, my most recent client, Katherine O’Connor, wanted to do something different with her vast shoe collection. She had so many heels, flats, boots, wedges, and sandals that she built a room solely (no pun intended) for them!

At first, I thought the project was a joke. I mean, who has that much footwear to organize (except Imelda Marcos, of course)? But it wasn’t:

Dropping my workbag and purse onto the floor, I run my hand over the smooth shelving and inhale the smell of fresh paint and wood. The space is nothing more than a blank canvas waiting for the artist. Normally a room like this would be putty in my hands, but without Ms. O’Connor’s input, it’s like I’m carving a piece of stone with a dull knife.

Within minutes, a three-person crew arrives with the boxes. Like a game of Tetris, the workers carefully stack different-sized boxes in the middle of the room. I can only stand to the side and stare at the vast amount of footwear they bring in. Counting them all would be pointless and daunting, so I stop calculating how many pairs I’m going to be organizing and wait for the workers to finish.

Then I roll up my sleeves, pull my hair back into a ponytail, and turn on my shoe organizing playlist. I decide to sort and order the shoes by color from darkest to lightest to make it easier for Ms. O’Connor to find what she needs.

Let me tell you, that was quite the job – it took seven hours to complete the whole room! Thankfully, I had my shoe organizing playlist to inspire me and keep me company.

Now, most people assume I always listen to “Let It Go” (for decluttering) or “Can’t Touch This” (when a client is trying to sneak back in a few of the items she had previously donated), but when I organize shoes, I enjoy listening to songs that connect me to the particular objects I’m arranging. In case you’re wondering which tunes I had on constant replay for the time I worked in Ms. O’Connor’s shoe room closet, here’s what streamed through my earbuds:

Of course, that’s just a sneak peek. There are others on the list, and you may even have one or two you think I should add it. If you do, please let me know! I’m always on the lookout for new music.

I wish I could say that organizing Ms. O’Connor’s shoe room was the only project I assisted her with, but it wasn’t. In fact, we had quite the adventure together after that. You can read all about it in Perfectly Arranged (Scrivenings press).

Of course, I could talk all day about organizing – how-to bring order to any space, products I can’t live without, different organizing styles – but I’ll leave that for another day and another post. In the meantime, if you need help with some of your chaos and clutter, reach out to Liana. She knows exactly how to find me!

  1. Hi Liana! (waving and jumping up and down!)
I’m SO EXCITED about this book – and can I just say that as sweet as I’m sure Nicki Mayfield is, Liana George is even sweeter! It’s not often that you meet someone at the airport and instantly find things in common – but it happens! Congratulations on your debut, and looking forward to many more to come!

  2. Roxanne C.

This was a fun post, but I can’t imagine ever having that many pairs of shoes to organize, never mind wear. How many pairs does Ms. O’Connor own?

  3. TJ

I’m not organized (well, except for my closet and bookshelves), but maybe I can learn a few tips through reading this book? It looks like a good story.
