Author: Lisa T. Bergren
Publisher: Stonewater Books
Release Date: 2021
Genre: Supernatural Suspense / Christian
An ancient, secret letter has long prophesied that the Gifted would gather. One with the ability to heal, another with the gift of wisdom. Others with the ability to see the future, discern truth, uncover evil intent, or exhibit miraculous powers. Together they are a force, born to change the world. But their gathering has drawn the attention of those who wield power…people determined to either control or destroy them.
“[A] classic battle between good and evil. Disregard Da Vinci Code comparisons, and think Lord of the Rings.” —Publishers Weekly

Begotten
Slowly, the forest settled back into shape, gently swaying in a high breeze, but no longer swirling. The falcon landed on a branch above him. And the woman…he’d never seen such a beautiful creature. Lord, who is this woman? If I am in danger, warn me now. The edges of her cloak parted as she leaned over him again, head bent in prayer. He noticed her long, graceful neck. Delicate collarbones. And pleasing cleavage peeking above a lady’s bodice made of the finest brocade and beads.
“M’lady,” he whispered, grabbing her hand, forcing her to still.
She looked at him then, arched brows furrowed over earth-brown eyes in which a man could find both tales and wisdom. A stern angel of God. “Cease looking at me like that,” she said, rising.
“Yes, m’lady,” he said, speaking normally now. He could breathe again, take a deep breath! He laughed at the sensation, filled his lungs and then laughed again. What sort of miracle had just occurred?
He was torn between the glory of an afterlife only barely touched—the promise, the glimpse that made his heart pound with hope, the desire to exist in that perfection—and his relief at being alive. But in the midst of it was this angel, this servant. God’s own hand, a wondrous creature. A healer. And beside her a priest and slave. What odd trio was this?

betrayed
He had returned to this same shore each day, searching for a glimpse of the woman, but the shutters on the high tower remained shut. No doubt it was cold in the small fortress. His eyes watched as a man dressed in a monk’s robes traded with another along the tower wall. He was not fooled. They were men dressed to appear as monks—to make the entire isle appear as a monastery. For the ships that passed in and out of the laguna, it provided adequate cover. But the men who fished these waters knew the truth and were either drawn to it, or repelled. Foul things were rumored to be happening inside the island’s walls.
This was the devil’s lair.
So why was the lady there? Had she been won over? Or was she held captive? Or had he been mistaken? Was it not her after all?
He finished hauling in his nets and cast one more glance toward the high walls that surrounded the island and the three guards in plain sight. He sighed heavily, wishing again that his God would allow him to rest, leave his gifting to others. He was getting to the age when he ought to be leaving the fishing to a son, cuddling grandchildren by the fire. But instead he was alone, as he had always been alone. The Lord had never allowed him a wife, as if preparing for this purpose alone. A purpose he had never wanted.
The fisherman went to the mast and hauled his sail upward. He shook his head to free it of the drenching rain and then blinked up into the sky that continued to send down showers. “I did not ask for this,” he said.
The old refrain was his answer. But it is your calling to trust and obey.

Blessed
“There are many on the prowl,” Armand said lowly. “Even now he is there, your enemy, among those rocks you see in the distance.” He pulled the group to a stop and pointed across the valley.
Daria shivered. Whereas the rocks of Les Baux were mostly weather-worn and rounded, the rocks the count pointed to looked as if they had been hewn from the earth that morning and set at precarious angles.
“Hell’s Keep,” Anette mused. “’Tis appropriate.”
“What is that?” Daria asked with a shiver.
“From Dante’s Divine Comedy? The poet rested here for a fortnight, and ’tis said that he took that valley there as his inspiration for his vision of hell.”
“Then it is apropos that Amidei shelters there,” Gianni said.
“Rest assured, my men will keep him from crossing the valley floor between us,” Armand said. “They traveled to Avignon before learning that you had taken shelter here, with us.”
“You shall make an enemy of him,” Daria warned.
“I believe I became his enemy the moment my men brought you here,” Armand said with a rakish grin, a bit of his old self emerging from beneath grief’s cloak. “It matters not. Your enemy is mine.”
“I fervently hope we shall not bring your castle down behind us. They shall stop at nothing, Armand,” she said, turning to lay a hand upon his arm in forewarning. “Nothing. They murdered my servants, captured my friends, burned my mansion to the ground, and ousted me from the Mercanzia. They even managed to disassociate me from my bank accounts. ’Tis all gone, save my friends and my faith.” Her eyes shifted to Gianni, and she abruptly dropped her hand from the count’s arm. “Do you understand what this may cost you?”
