Friends. Every guy’s favorite word from the mouth of the woman he loved.

His own fault.

But wait. He recalled her tone. Had he detected a hint of trouble in paradise? No, he couldn’t hold on to empty hope.

Rather than think too long on a fruitless subject, he tossed out a few suggestions for dinner. They agreed on a place almost immediately, as usual. There was something to be said for having similar tastes in most things, especially food.

“Thank you, by the way,” he remembered to tell her after returning home and getting situated in his recliner once again. “Not just for leaving work early to take me to therapy today. For being such a good friend. I’ve missed you.”

Keenan hadn’t meant to admit that last part. Shouldn’t have, really, but it was still true. He had missed their friendship. Hanging out with her had always been a highlight. Comfortable. Easy. Everything.

Hanady’s cheeks pinked before she rewarded him with her dimpled smile. Man, she was pretty.

And not his.

Keep reminding yourself, buddy.

As if it was possible to forget. The ring on her hand flashed like a beacon every time the light hit it – in case he might overlook the other constant reminders.
