“Poppy!” he cried, his throat raspy and raw. Finally reaching her, he lay over her to shield her from further debris and brushed hair from her filthy face, which was stained with blood. “Poppy,” he said again as he felt for a pulse, relieved when he registered one. His heart rate increased, knowing she could be severely injured. He caressed her cheek and whispered her name again as he laid his brow on hers, thanking God she was at least alive.
A painful moan passed through her lips.
“Talk to me, Poppy.”
She raised a weak hand and rested it on his cheek, the most tender she’d ever been with him. And it shifted places he didn’t realize were even inside him. “Get off me,” she muttered.
Her words finally registered and he actually laughed. He should have known she wasn’t being emotional. But it had done something to him, which he couldn’t deny—but he was going to do his best. “We have to get out of here,” he said. “Can you move?”
“If you get off me,” she said through a faint grin.
Right. He removed his protective weight from her but remained shielding her just in case. Suddenly, she bolted upright, fear in her eyes—probably the reality of what had happened and the still present danger. “Was it a bomb?”
“No. Strategic bullet to the gas tank.”
The whir of a four-wheeler or motorcycle sounded, and a red blur headed for them. In the distance, the screech of a siren signaled that the police and ambulance had been notified.
Poppy rubbed her lower back and grimaced. “This is turning out to be the second-worst lead-up to a holiday I’ve ever experienced.”
