The same yearning she’d experienced when she examined the tea cart downstairs swelled within her chest. She wasn’t a huge history buff, but she couldn’t help entertaining certain ideas in a house like this. Maybe not a real carriage ride, but other, still-attainable Dickens Christmas-type thoughts, like children playing and visitors coming in from the cold. Like the joy of living with a family again.

Like maybe she wasn’t as at peace with the idea of being single as she thought she was.

He whistled, drawing her attention to the sampler hanging on the wall. “Look at this.”

Grateful for the distraction from her thoughts, Leah came to look at it. “‘The Lord is my strength and my song,'” she read. “I like that verse. Beautiful needlework, too. Looks old.”

“My mom had a sampler with that verse on it. Not quite as fancy.” His sipping-chocolate eyes were warm, gazing at her, and her stomach lurched in a way that had nothing to do with her need for a square meal.

Great, so now she was yet one more of the Widow’s Peak Creek females who considered Benton Hunt attractive personally, not just objectively. Not that it meant anything or ever would. She was not interested in romance. And with him of all people.
