Ho, ho, ho.” Cole lowered his voice, hoping they wouldn’t recognize him. “Well, hello there.”

Maggie stepped forward right away. “Hi, Santa.”

“Come on in here, young lady.” Cole patted the seat beside him, and Maggie wasted no time. Handing her a candy cane, he said, “Tell ol’ Santa what you’d like for Christmas.”

“I want an Emma Country Girl doll.”

“I hear she’s very popular.”

Maggie nodded. “And—” she leaned closer, cupping her hand around her mouth “—I want Mama Rae to marry Mr. Cole.”

He froze, his gut tightening. Did she think he and Rae were a couple? Sure, they were spending a lot of time together, but… God, how do I respond to this?

He cleared his throat, willing his shock aside. “I’m sorry, young lady, but Santa doesn’t have control over matters of the heart.”

Maggie blinked up at him. “Why not? Mama Rae says Mr. Cole would make a good catch.”

His insides warmed as his gaze inadvertently drifted to the woman taking countless photographs, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Did she now?”
