Surprise Christmas blessings

Her Holiday Family by Winnie Griggs

Reserved widow Eileen Pierce never considered herself cut out to be a mother. But when handyman Simon Tucker is stranded in town with ten young orphans at Christmastime, she can’t just turn them away. Though Simon’s easygoing demeanor clashes with Eileen’s buttoned-up propriety, his kindness melts her stern facade. Soon Simon and the children upend Eileen’s quiet, orderly life. Will they do the same to her guarded heart?

The Sheriff’s Christmas Twins by Karen Kirst

Convinced that Allison Ashworth deserves better, Sheriff Shane Timmons has always tried to remain aloof. But with Allison in Gatlinburg for the holidays and caring for two motherless babies, Shane wants to help her. Allison has always been drawn to Shane, but he never seemed to look her way. Now, spending time with him and the twins gives her hope that her dreams of motherhood—and a life with Shane—may come true.

Hi, everyone! Thanks so much for welcoming me here today, and a very special thanks to Carrie for inviting me. I was so excited when I learned Love Inspired would be reissuing this book in time for the holidays. This has always been a favorite story of mine.

The idea for the story started with the idea of someone suddenly finding themselves unexpectedly responsible for a LARGE number of children. In fact when I turned in the proposal to my editor and she realized it would feature ten young orphans she had very strong doubts and encouraged me to try to cut that number down to something more manageable. But I asked her to trust that I could pull it off and she finally agreed to let me give it a try.

And of course this someone whom the children descended upon couldn’t be a motherly, nurturing homemaker. Oh no it had to be someone who was totally unprepared for the onslaught (not that anyone is truly prepared to have 10 unfamiliar kids who suddenly arrive on their doorstep!). And I found the perfect character in Eileen Pierce, a secondary character from one of my previous Turnabout, Texas books. Eileen is an appearance-conscious, buttoned-up widow with a troubled past who’s been spurned by her neighbors (for seemingly good reasons). Add to that the fact that the children come with a temporary caretaker who is as handsome as he is laid-back and it’s a set-up sure to add lots of sparks. And because this story was set during the Christmas season I was able to infuse it with some extra warmth and poignancy.

As for my editor—well when she read the completed manuscript she said it was one of her all-time favorite books from me.

Thanks for letting me share a little bit of my thought process in developing this story. I wish all of you a very happy and blessed Christmas season.

Winnie Griggs grew up in south Louisiana in an undeveloped area her schoolmates considered the very back of beyond. With her two younger siblings and another family of three siblings for playmates, she spent many an hour exploring the overgrown land around her home, cutting jungle trails, building forts and frontier camps, and looking for pirate ships on the nearby bayou.

Once she ‘grew up’ she found other outlets for dealing with all those wonderful, adventurous, imaginary friends by filling notebooks with their stories. And somewhere along the way, those scribblings gave way to full length books.

Eventually she found her own Prince Charming, a rancher whose white steed takes the form of a tractor and whose kingdom is situated in a small rural community that she loves to call home, and together they’ve built their own storybook happily-ever-after. Their lives together expanded to include four now grown children who share Winnie’s vivid imagination and her husband’s steadier influences and are now out in the world pursuing their own adventures.

I like the descriptions of the characters, especially, Eileen. She seems like a person I would like to get to know.

I love to read any books with a Christmas/holiday theme. Congratulations on your book. Merry Christmas!
