“She’s cute.” He couldn’t help but smile. “You said her name’s Clara?”

Holly nodded.

“How old is she?” He had a million more questions, but he’d start there.

“Almost four months.”

“And she’s my brother’s.” He didn’t question it. It was just hard to take in.

“Yes.” Her eyebrows drew together. “Why? Don’t you believe me?”

“I believe you. She has the Mayer eyes.” He gestured to a worn chair. “May I?”
