PCS orders—permanent change of station—always took him by surprise. Didn’t matter if they were expected or not, a long way off or short notice. Even if he was ready to move on and the timing happened to be perfect, then the location would throw him for a loop.

This afternoon he’d been blindsided by both.

Dover, Delaware. December fifth.

He leaned back in his desk chair and ran a hand across his neck. Six months from now, he’d be living across the United States and starting over yet again.

Ordinarily, the prospect would excite him. He’d start searching online for a place off-base to live, check out things to do in the area, figure out what he’d need to take care of before the move.

So why did it feel like he’d swallowed a boulder for lunch?

He recalled the feeling from the other night, Jenna nestled in close at his side, their hands entwined. She’d felt like an extension of him. Even now, his body no longer felt self-contained in this physical entity here in the back office he only used for endless government required paperwork. A part of him extended out through space to wherever Jenna was at this moment.

How could that be? They hadn’t yet defined the relationship growing between them. Hadn’t even kissed.

Not for lack of wanting to. But the ball was in Jenna’s court. She was in the driver’s seat. The troops were at her command.

Dyson shook his head. Too many metaphors ran through his brain, trying to remind himself of the truth. As much as he felt attached to Jenna, she wasn’t ready for a romantic relationship.

Which meant that he needed to do more than wait for her to make a move forward. He needed to throttle back altogether. Friends at best. A relationship now just didn’t make sense, not when it would come to a halt in less than six months anyway.

What had he been thinking in the first place? He’d known he was getting orders soon. And hadn’t she said something about never wanting to live anywhere else?

Idiot. He hadn’t been thinking, had he? No, he’d been sucked in by pretty eyes, strawberry scent, and spunk. Then he’d gone and let himself get attached.

At least he had time to get himself unattached.

Except he was pretty sure his heart had already gone on a PCS of its own.
