Twenty years ago on Valentine’s Day, I was serving overcooked spaghetti to the married couples in our church when a lady came up to me. She smiled, stared a bit, and then bluntly asked if I was dating anyone.

I blinked. At least twice. Then gave her a hesitant no.

Her smile grew, and she asked: “What do you think of my son?”

Her son, who, while very attractive, was older than me, far away at college, assuredly not thinking of a young high schooler, and very, VERY unaware of his mother’s scheming actions. However, less than three years later, I married her son. And although it wasn’t any, or at least not many, of my mother-in-law’s “strategies” that got us together, my mother-in-law still claims it was her doing.

Twelve years following our “I do’s”, I wrote The Rancher’s Want Ad Mix-up. Afterwards, I realized my very own mother-in-law helped inspire the book without me even trying. I thought I had only written a story about a teacher who misunderstood a mail-order bride want ad as a school teaching position. But behind the want ad was a very determined groom’s parents. Sound familiar?

Thankfully, my husband and my official first date went a lot smoother than Hank and Della’s. Here’s a sneak peek at how they met:

Della bit the inside of her cheek, stopping her mind from wandering where it shouldn’t. This was not her fiancé. She was not here to be a bride. No matter what everyone else here seemed to think.

Alice pushed her fists onto her sturdy hips. “Hiram Robert Lamson. I told you we were to have an important arrival. Where, may I ask, are your Sunday clothes?”

“Ma. I don’t have time for…” He glanced at Della before concentrating again on Alice. “For this.”

“Please tell me I did not raise you with such awful manners.”

His brown eyes locked on to Della’s, and she had to remind herself she wasn’t the swooning type. “Look, ma’am…”

“Her name’s Miss Della Mae Wagner.” Alice emphasized the Miss part and pushed Della closer. “She came here all the way from Indiana. You two go ahead and shake. Got to start somewhere.”

Huffing a sigh, he grabbed a handkerchief from his pocket. After wiping off his palms, he offered his welcome. Della’s hand fit perfectly inside his warm and slightly calloused hand. It felt nothing at all like holding hands with Tom, whose palms were always cold and clammy.

When he let go, Della laced her fingers together, trying to keep the warmth of his touch. A shiver ran down her back. She told herself it must have been caused by the wind.

“Miss Wagner, let’s cut right to it. I’m sure you’re as delightful as all the other ladies, and I do hate that you traveled all the way out here. Nonetheless I’m not interested in courting you.”

Finally, a matching voice of reason. “That’s actually—”

“Oh, Hank.” Alice’s shoulders dropped as she spoke over Della.

“She’s not like the others.”

“Ma here will feed you before you head back to Indiana.” He scratched the side of his face and flakes of dirt floated to the ground. “And just so you understand, I am not looking for a wife. If you’d tell that to all your friends it would save everyone a heap of trouble.”

Della straightened her back at Mr. Lamson’s tone. So much for an ally amongst the confusion. Of course, she wasn’t looking for a husband any more than this man sought a wife, yet she couldn’t help but relive the sting of Tom’s rejection all over again. “I’m not here to apply to be your wife. Nor to be someone you court.”

Alice released a small gasp and Mr. Lamson crossed his arms as if he didn’t believe her, either. “You’re not?”

Mercy sakes. Did women fall at his feet so often he was surprised that anyone didn’t wish to be his wife? What kind of women lived in Missouri?

Hank and Della didn’t have the best of introductions, but one misunderstood mail-order bride ad plus a house full of boys to teach may just be the perfect recipe for a happily ever after. That is if the schemes of life don’t get in their way.
