RELEASE DATE: April 12, 2022

After Catherine Reed’s husband dies in a tragic logging accident, Catherine and her four-year-old daughter, Clair, move home with Clair’s mother and brother in order to accept a new position as the teacher for the town’s one-room schoolhouse. But Catherine carries a dark secret that she hasn’t even shared with her mother. Will she ever find forgiveness?

Samuel Harris has suffered his own loss, losing his wife and unborn child over a year prior. Although he is the town’s preacher, he struggles to trust God, blaming God for allowing him to be absent when his wife died. The guilt has burdened him ever since. But when his old flame Catherine Reed comes back to town, he wonders if they can find healing together.

Catherine believes that anyone who wants to learn should be allowed to learn, but she is quick to find a town divided on that issue. As she and Samuel set out to change people’s minds in a post-Civil War era, they find themselves drawn to each other over and over again. As they join together for the same cause, could they also find a second chance at happiness?

Hi Greta! Welcome to the blog!

Greta: Summer

Carrie: too hot for me!

Greta: Most definitely cats

Carrie: achoo!

Greta: Both, can I say both?

Carrie: both is a perfectly acceptable answer 🙂

Greta: Sandwich

Carrie: it depends on the sandwich, for me. But then again, it depends on the soup too lol

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Greta: My superpower would be flying.

Carrie: that would make travel so much easier, wouldn’t it?

Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?

Greta: Aslan is my favorite book character from childhood. I loved being swept away into Narnia and even opted to change the mascot on my class ring to a lion in honor of Aslan who was a Christ-like figure in the books.

Carrie: yes! I adore Aslan and my heart always swells a bit when I read “Aslan is on the move” ♥

Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?

Greta: My favorite place to write is my creativity room. It’s a room dedicated to writing. It houses an 8’ long, white, plastic table, my laptop and my notes on the stories I’ve written or am working on.

Carrie: ooo i love the idea of a creativity room!

Q: Which character in Second Chance at Happiness was the most difficult to write?

Greta: Catherine was the most difficult to write because she lost her husband and is still grieving. There is a vast, life-sucking hole left in her heart. Could she open her heart to love again?

Carrie: i imagine she would have been difficult to write – lots of emotional layers to unpack.

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Second Chance at Happiness?

Greta: I want them to know that no matter the sin or failing, God forgives and forgets.

Carrie: amen

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Greta: I signed a contract for the sequel to Second Chance at Happiness, which is the brother, Harl’s story. The working title is The Rejected Mail-Order Bride. I had such fun with this story and hope readers enjoy it just as much if not more than Second Chance at Happiness.

I’m really curious to see how Catherine and the preacher grow in their relationship with each other and how Catherine’s daughter fits into the mix.
