Hi Cathy! Welcome to the blog!

Cathy: Winter. Because I live in Central Arizona where summers temperatures can reach 115 degrees, this was an easy choice.

Carrie: boy, if i wasn’t already a fan of winter, living there would do it!

Cathy: Coffee. Hands down. Sadly, I’ve recently had to change to decaf for health reasons. But coffee, even decaf, is my morning drink of choice.

Carrie: maybe your tastebuds can trick your brain into think the coffee’s fully loaded haha

Cathy: Pepsi. And, yes, I can taste the difference. Once, many years ago, I was picked off the streets for a blind taste test commercial between Coke and Pepsi. I correctly picked Pepsi all three times and wound up in the commercial.

Carrie: lol that’s awesome!!

Cathy: Soup. I think it’s the perfect healthy food and while I’m not much of a cook, I can make great homemade soups.

Carrie: yum!!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Cathy: I probably should have been a detective. I have a keen sense of observation, notice tiny details others miss, and pick up on subtle nuances in people.  I think it’s a good superpower for a writer to have as it helps me with story ideas. And I amaze my husband.

Carrie: amazing one’s husband is always a nice bonus 🙂

Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?

Cathy: The Black Stallion (does a horse count as a character?)

Carrie: totally counts!

Q: Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

Cathy: In 2019, my flight was diverted from New York to Boston because of a terrible storm. I had to be in New York the next morning. I couldn’t not be there. It was really important. The airlines had no idea when the next flight would be available, much less when the weather would clear, and suggested we passengers either spend the night hanging around the airport or get a hotel room. I did neither. I pulled out my phone, opened the Uber app, and requested a ride from Boston airport to my hotel in New York. People standing around me told me I was crazy. But fifteen minutes later, I was climbing into an Uber. The ride cost me $200, including tip. The driver even stopped at Starbucks so I could get a coffee. Yes, I had to pay extra, but by midnight, I was in my New York hotel room.

Carrie: way to go!!! That beats sitting around an airport any day!

Q: Which of your characters has been the most difficult to write?

Cathy: One of the hardest characters for me to write was my heroine in How to Marry a Cowboy. She suffered from abandonment issues and, as this isn’t something I’m familiar with, I had trouble relating to her. Usually, with my characters, I can understand some aspect of what they’re going through or the challenge they’re facing. With her, I was a little stumped and had trouble relating to her pain.

Carrie: i imagine that would be difficult

Q: Do you have the whole plot outlined before you start writing, or do you let the characters dictate what comes next?

Cathy: I admit it, I’m a plotter. I complete the synopsis while I’m writing the first chapter. And while I pretty much stick to the synopsis, I allow for small changes that come to me during the process, which always make the story better.

Carrie: i know some authors who hate writing the synopsis who would be totally in awe of you haha

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Wildfire Threat?

Cathy: My heroine, Rayna, believes the worst of my hero, Aden, based on a crime he committed as a teenager. She refuses to believe he’s changed and doesn’t trust him. Eventually, she comes to see him in a different light. I think it’s important that we not judge people on their past mistakes, especially those made when they were young, and give them a chance to show us the person they are now. Treat others as you wish to be treated.

Carrie: so very true! How lavishly we wish for grace to be extended to us but how stingy we are in extending it to others.

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Cathy: My next Love Inspired Suspense, BLIZZARD REFUGE, will be out November 2022. Also part of the Mountain Rescue Collection, this book is another seat-of-your-pants action-packed thrill ride.

Carrie: yay!

I will try it again. This sounds intriguing. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.

I enjoyed the interview. I’ll watch for the “aha” moment when Rayna starts to see Aden with more positive view.
