Hi Donna! Welcome to the blog!
Donna: Oranges because for some reason when I eat apples I crave junk food after, which kind of defeats the purpose!
Carrie: oh that’s interesting!
Donna: Cats because my beautiful Siamese-cross, Phil, makes me laugh every day. I think that Cats are more affectionate and need more attention than people think.
Carrie: I have yet to meet a cat that’s as affectionate as a dog, but maybe I’ve just been hanging out with the wrongs ones haha
Donna: Print because I love the feel of a book in my hand and the rustle of turning pages.
Carrie: nothing can beat that, for sure!
Donna: Music because listening to the lyrics of talented songwriters can often inspire me to write.
Carrie: i find that song lyrics inspire my creativity too!
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Donna: Honestly, it would be the ability to be endlessly patient with all who I come in contact with. I can’t do that without God’s help so that would feel like a superpower to me.
Carrie: that would definitely need Divine intervention!!
Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?
Donna: Sara Crewe from A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. She was resilient and imaginative, and she remained kind and generous under adversity. I had her qualities in mind when I named my beautiful daughter Sara.
Carrie: aww i love that
Q: Do you have any strange quirks while writing?
Donna: I can’t write in absolute silence. I don’t want to be distracted by having to pay too much attention to something else, though, so my go-to is to have tried and true TV re-runs on in the background. Gilmore Girls and Heartland are two of my favourites. I mentioned being inspired by music, that’s in between writing sprints. I can’t write while I’m listening or I’ll sing along!
I also always need to have a cup of tea or coffee within reach.
Carrie: I like having ‘comfort TV’ on in the background too. For me, that’s usually NCIS or Law & Order… or Homicide Hunter.
Q: Is there anything that surprised you about Finding Her Voice as you wrote it?
Donna: To be honest, the biggest surprise was that I finished this one. For a variety of reasons, I went through a real struggle and experienced the worst writer’s block of my entire career. People were very well-meaning and had a lot of advice, which unfortunately didn’t help. But I kept praying and said, “God this is between you and me.” Now that advanced reader copies are out and it has been getting some very positive reactions, I just smile and feel grateful and humble because I know that this is the book that God finished for me. Of course, I give Him the credit for any creative talents I have, but I never felt it so profoundly as I do with this book.
Carrie: He is faithful ♥
Q: What is something that God taught you while you wrote Finding Her Voice?
Donna: As mentioned above, I have an even deeper sense now of how much He cares, how willing He is to see us through our struggles, no matter what they are. He is always with us and we can trust Him without boundaries.
Carrie: amen!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Donna: I am currently working on the second book of a three-book contract with Love Inspired. It’s called The Second Chance Series and each book explores a way that the characters learn to believe in love again and that their dreams can come true. I’m developing quite the crush on the hero in the second book, so that’s fun!
