Hazel Thornton has one great ambition: to help the sick and wounded as a nurse. But that dream can never become a reality. After a devastating childhood trauma, she has spent her life battling fits of panic that make it impossible to finish her studies. Everything changes, however, when a trip to Spain takes a perilous turn that derails her plans to visit her father for Christmas and immediately plunges her into the dangers of a brutal war.
With single-minded focus, she springs into action to help her fellow travelers. To ensure their continued care, she begins work at a Spanish hospital alongside Dr. Jim Jackson, a man whose only emotion seems to be wariness of his new assistant. Armed with gifts of support from each of her dearest friends, a group that dubs themselves the Blue Orchid Society, Hazel embarks on a journey of hope and healing to battle the demons of her past with the help of the doctor who has captured her heart.
Other Books In This Series
Hi Jennifer! Welcome to the blog!
Jennifer: Summer!! I love being warm and tan and all the casual no-schedule-ness of summertime. I get kind of grumpy when I’m cold and it’s dark and gloomy.
Carrie: I am the exact opposite haha – i get grumpy when it’s hot outside.
Jennifer: Dogs. I don’t hate cats or anything, but I love my dog, Otis.
Carrie: the love of a dog is like nothing else!
Jennifer: Audiobooks. I always have a book playing, like when I’m walking my dog or driving in the car or vacuuming or drying my hair or weeding or whatever.
Carrie: I so wish I could enjoy audiobooks – I would get so much more reading done!
Jennifer: Coke. But it needs to be Diet Coke. It’s my beverage of choice.
Carrie: yes please!! And no, Diet Pepsi is not okay 😉
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Jennifer: I think my superpower is staying calm—I am always pretty mellow. Maybe even a little boring. But when there is an emergency or someone calls me upset, I really don’t react with tears or panicking. I guess I just have a chill energy. And with all the times I’ve had to take my accident-prone kids to the emergency room, it’s turned out to be a good thing.
Carrie: that is definitely an important superpower to have!
Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?
Jennifer: I go to the sections right up front, usually they are on a table or shelf directly in front of the door—bestsellers or new releases—I browse them, then head to the fiction section.
Carrie: i love browsing the bestsellers/new releases section too – though I rarely buy from that section for some reason.
Q: Which character in Healing Hazel was the most difficult to write?
Jennifer:Hazel was difficult for me. I wanted to portray her mental illness accurately, and I’ve never been a person with panic attacks, so I talked to a lot of people—a psychiatrist, even—and read a few books to make sure it was a good representation of what that feels like.
Carrie: as someone who did suffer from panic attacks from about 3rd grade well into my 30s, i so appreciate authors drawing attention to them and doing the research! thank you ♥
Q: Do you have the whole plot outlined before you start writing, or do you let the characters dictate what comes next?
Jennifer: I’m kind of a loose plotter. Like I know the main plot points, but I still like the discovery aspect of writing. So, like I’ll know the outcome of a scene, but it’s fun to just start writing and see how the characters get there.
Carrie: i like that approach – the best of both worlds 🙂
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Healing Hazel?
Jennifer: I think the theme of this book has to do with inner injuries and outer injuries and how the characters are held back by both. A physical injury is, of course, the most obvious and healing from it is semi-predictable. The doctor sets the bone or stitches up a cut or whatever. But we all have that other stuff that slows our forward progress—maybe it’s the result of a childhood trauma or an accident—It’s the stuff people don’t see. But it can be even more difficult to heal from. And if we’re going to make good relationships and grow, we have to process it, learn from it, and move on.
Carrie: so true!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Jennifer: I am working on a short story for a fairytale retelling anthology that is coming out around Christmas time. A Cinderella story with a twist.
Carrie: Oooo you had me at ‘Cinderella story’!
