Ever since her parents went to federal prison on racketeering convictions, Lucetta Bellini has felt cheated out of a promising future. Her newfound relationship with Christ helps her curtail her angry outbursts, but trusting others doesn’t come easily.

As Lucetta finishes her senior year of college, Countershade— the online money laundering operation created by her parents years before—reappears on the darknet, with a cutting-edge cryptocurrency promising anonymity. Lucetta seeks out the shadowy site administrator, and in the process, unwittingly puts her digital fingerprints on evidence that frames her as the mastermind behind the illegal marketplace’s rebirth.

With a reckless need to define herself apart from her family’s destructive legacy, Lucetta dives into an investigation to identify the site’s new architect. Her journey to expose the truth betrays family secrets, reveals unexpected enemies, and emboldens her faith.

Hi Kelley! Welcome to the blog!

Kelley: I love dogs, but I have nothing against cats. I had a retired racing greyhound for years (who hated to run), and when she passed, we adopted a lovable mutt who runs with me in the morning.

Carrie: aww i guess the greyhound took retirement seriously lol

Kelley: Chai, all day, everyday, from funny mugs. I love the smell of coffee but not the taste.

Carrie: i like neither coffee or tea but i do love mugs!

Kelley: Coke Zero, from the smaller can, ice cold. Tasty delight!

Carrie: Make it a diet coke and I’m there!

Kelley: I totally geek out over board games! Current favorites are Scythe, Wingspan, Parks, and Agricola, but you can’t go wrong with a good game of Settlers of Catan.

Carrie: we are big board game players too, especially with our nieces & nephews!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Kelley: Growing things. I love my flower garden and watching my kids learn new things.

Carrie: I definitely need that superpower. I have yet to meet a plant I couldn’t kill.

Q: Which books are “on your nightstand”?

Kelley: Physically, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by Phillip Keller, The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron, and John Adams by David McCullough. Metaphorically, there’s a Google keep document on my phone with my TBR list.

Carrie: I love Keller & Cron!

Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?

Kelley: What’s the fastest way to derail a train?

Carrie: *makes a note to not get on a train with Kelley lol

Q: Which of all your main characters is most like you?

Kelley: Brenna in The Senator’s Youngest Daughter is most like my personality, but Jane from Going Back Cold shares my personal story of a stillbirth.

Carrie: ♥

Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote Countershade?

Kelley: My Story by Big Daddy Weave:

If I told you my story
You would hear hope, that wouldn’t let go
And if I told you my story
You would hear love that never gave up

And if I told you my story
You would hear life, but it wasn’t mine
If I should speak, then let it be of the grace
That is greater than all my sin

Of when justice was served, and where mercy wins!
Of the kindness of Jesus, that draws me in
Oh to tell you my story, is to tell of Him

Carrie: i love that song – such great lyrics!

Q: What is one of your favorite quotes from Countershade & why do you love it?

Kelley: “Holly wasn’t in the hospital room years before when Lucetta was born. But she was there on the day that the girl’s heart was made new, and heaven celebrated this most precious sinner’s repentance.”

I’m a foster mom and an adoptive mom. This quote is my testimony that you don’t have to have all the biology or history to celebrate a child’s big and little wins or to be a part of God’s transformational work in their life.

Carrie: amen!

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂
