Where is God in This?

WHERE IS GOD IN THIS? by Landra Young Hughes with Holly Crawshaw
GENRE: Christian Living
PUBLISHER: Baker Books
RELEASE DATE: October 18, 2022
PAGES: 192

Life is unfair. Bad things happen to good people. Not all dreams come true. We lose people. We fail people. And when we encounter the inevitable struggles of life, we may be tempted to ask God Why me? as we try to reconcile our pain with God’s promises. But a far more helpful and life-enriching question for us to ask God is What are you trying to teach me in this?

Tackling ten common struggles, such as isolation, fear, rejection, failure, insecurity, temptation, and more, Landra Young Hughes shows you how to have peace even when life doesn’t make sense. Speaking with great empathy born from her own losses and years in ministry, Hughes doesn’t suggest you “get over” your hard times. Instead, she helps you recognize that, while you will always live in a broken world this side of heaven, your pain has much to teach you about God and yourself. With her empathetic help, you’ll discover how to grow through grief and thrive despite adversity.

Hi Landra! Welcome to the blog!

Landra: Oranges! I love citrus flavors and use them a lot in my cooking.

Carrie: Apples for me, please 🙂

Landra: Audiobooks! I’m a busy mom to three young kids. If I’m going to enjoy any book for the next 18 years, it’s gotta be read to me!

Carrie: haha!!

Landra: Over! Because it’s the right way to use it! 🙂

Carrie: lol so everyone keeps telling me … I may have to rethink my toilet paper installation preferences 😛

Landra: Ocean. I am a beach girl who grew up fishing with my dad. I have a lot of great memories with my family at the beach.

Carrie: aww those are great memories to have!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Landra: Cooking! I love, love cooking. It’s like therapy to me. I especially like taking old recipes and making them in new ways. Don’t get me wrong, I can order Chick-fil-a like a pro. But I also love making meals for my family to enjoy!

Carrie: I wish I had your superpower!

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Landra: To the kids’ section! If I’m not at work, I’m hanging with my kids and husband, Brad. I want to instill a love for words and reading in my kids, so we’re constantly checking out new books together.

Carrie: I love that, yes!

Q: If I snuck a peek in your purse right now (which I would never do, I promise!), what would it tell me about you?

Landra: It would tell you that I’m a busy working mom—like so many of you! I have snacks for the kids (and, let’s be honest, for myself). I have a spare diaper and wipes … because you just never know! And I have notes I’m working on for a message I’m giving at church in a few weeks.

Carrie: Snacks are very important! 🙂

Q: Why is the theme of Where is God in This important to you?

Landra: Our suffering is one of the most difficult aspects of Christianity to make peace with. If I can help one person see God’s goodness during a season of grief or despair, then all the work that has gone into Where Is God in This worth it.

Carrie: amen ♥

Q: What is something that surprised you the most while researching Where is God in This?

Landra: How lonely people feel in their grief. One of the most critical steps in any recovery is community. Grief is no different. We weren’t meant to walk through life in isolation, and that’s especially true during times of sorrow and heartache.

Carrie: yes! My mom has found great community and healthy ways to grieve after my dad’s death last year by engaging with our church’s GriefShare support group. It’s been so helpful for her. I, on the other hand, am someone who prefers to grieve alone, but I have a small community of dear friends who have walked alongside me this past year and made sure I had an outlet for my grief when I needed it.

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Where is God in This?

Landra: That the goodness of God isn’t based on our circumstances. The goodness of God is based on the cross, and on Jesus’ death and resurrection as payment for our sins. Our reconciliation to God gives access to grace, healing, and the hope of heaven. Remembering that hope in seasons of sorrow is vital to the healing process.

Carrie: amen ♥ amen ♥ amen

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Landra: I’m doing a ton of press and appearances for Where Is God in This?. My first book, A Different Kind of Love Story was released at the height of the pandemic, so I’m SO excited to meet some of my readers!

I’m guilty of asking God “why me?” for the past couple of years. Landra posing the question “God, what are you trying to teach me in this?” is convicting and sheds new light on how to view my circumstances.
