Hi Tanya! Welcome back to the blog!
Tanya: Apples. I love clementines, but you don’t have to peel apples (well, you can!), and I love their versatility. I can eat an apple with lunch or I can bake them into delicious desserts! Apple pie a la mode? That’s one of my favorites.
Carrie: yum! yes please!
Tanya: Over. I have no idea why. I just prefer it that way.
Carrie: apparently ‘over’ is considered the correct way so you’re in step with the masses haha
Tanya: Sandwich. To me, they’re more of an all-around food. I can eat a sandwich for lunch or dinner. I can also eat them year-round in any kind of weather. I love chicken pesto sandwiches, and I still eat toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Carrie: wait… TOASTED pb&j?? I need to try this goodness!
Tanya: Board games. My grandmother taught me how to play cards, and I love card games, but Clue is one of my all-time favorite ways to spend the evening. I’m a huge fan of Taboo and Sorry and Pay Day. I love board games, and my twins are often up to a night of board game fun.
Carrie: we love playing board games with our nieces & nephews
Q: Other than the Bible, what are five of your most cherished books?
Tanya: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery; The Secret of the Mansion (Trixie Belden Book #1) by Julie Campbell; Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh; A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux; and The Bookshop Dog by Cynthia Rylant. (A note of explanation as it’s a children’s book – I loved reading that book to all of my children, and that was always the book I took with me to read to their classmates, so that one has sentimental value!)
Carrie: aww i love that! (And yay for Trixie!! Always fun to see her make a list like this)
Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?
Tanya: As far as everyday writing, my favorite place to write is Panera Bread. While I can and do also write at home, there’s always something that needs to be done (unloading the dishwasher, folding laundry, or cleaning the bathrooms) or someone that wants attention (during the day, that would be my lovable beagle, Linus) at my house. Going to Panera (or the local library) after I drop off the twins at school provides me with three straight hours of writing with very few distractions. But I really enjoyed writing at a beachside condo on a retreat and would jump at another chance to go on a writing retreat!
Carrie: ooo i wouldn’t turn down that kind of writing retreat either 🙂
Q: If Hollywood wanted to produce The Firefighter’s Christmas Promise as a movie, who would you want to be cast as the lead roles?
Tanya: I’d love to see Oscar Isaac cast as Carlos Ramirez, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Becks Porter.
Carrie: excellent choices!
Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing The Firefighter’s Christmas Promise, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?
Tanya: I am a plotter, but even so, there are always little surprises that greet me once I start writing. In this case, there was an opportunity in the book to provide a tiny glimmer of romance to one of my favorite supporting characters, who entered the Hollydale books in The Soldier’s Unexpected Family.
I just re-read the original plot guide I wrote before I started the book, and the final book is pretty consistent with the outline.
Carrie: i admire you for being a plotter!!
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from The Firefighter’s Christmas Promise?
Tanya: I hope readers have a genuinely good time reading the book and finish the story with a happy holiday cozy feeling. Second chances are often possible, especially this time of year, and love and laughter can go a long way into brightening difficult situations. For Carlos, he feels as though he has to act in the way everyone expects rather than showing his true self. It takes an accident that may or may not signal the end of his career (I don’t want to spoil the ending!), a rekindled friendship with his former fiancée and her lovable daughter, and a special dog to let him know that he just needs to be himself and get into the spirit of the season. I’d love for Carlos and Becks’s story to touch readers’ hearts and leave them with a positive message of hope with Christmas around the corner.
Carrie: hooray for special dogs 😀
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Tanya: Thank you so much for hosting me today! I am so happy to announce my new series, The Rodeo Stars of Violet Ridge, is coming next. The first book, Caught by the Cowgirl, has an April 24, 2023 release date. For rancher Will Sullivan, nothing is more beautiful than a Colorado sunrise…until Kelsea Carruthers shows up at his ranch, wanting to lease his land. But Will has plans for his struggling ranch that don’t include the gorgeous, quirky Southern belle. Now Kelsea is quickly learning how to be a true cowgirl—even as she steals everyone’s hearts. And this gruff, set-in-his-ways cowboy might just be falling the hardest…
