When her gaze jerked to his, she found him staring at her. A hint of uncertainty in his eyes.
“I’d planned to be here when it came, but things didn’t play out the way I’d intended.” He gestured toward it. “Please. Open it.”
She took hold of the package and set it atop the stack of tiles that remained. Then she ran a finger beneath the tape, allowing the craft paper to fall open.
Her heart stuttered. Why was Hawkins being so serious? What was in here?
Reaching inside, she lifted the thin piece of wood. As she turned it around, tears sprang to her eyes, even though she didn’t want them to. She was supposed to be reading Hawkins the riot act. But how could she when she now understood why he’d wanted her here?
“It’s the logo you and Gloriana designed.” His voice was rough behind her.
She stared at the sign with the rustic white wood-look background, a red Christmas truck in the center with a pine tree sticking out the back and the words Hope Crossing Christmas Tree Farm at the top in the same green font she and Gloriana had decided on.
“I thought it might look good hanging here on the porch.”
Of course it would.
Before she could think better of it, she set the sign down, turned and hugged his neck. “It’s beautiful.”

A Christmas tree farm has always seemed like a place to go and enjoy nature – at least at Christmastime. I don’t think I’d want to own or work at one. So many now use artificial trees (so do we) that I wonder if they are profitable. But I would like to read Mindy’s story about Annalise and Hawkins.
