The Time My Dad Interrupted My Christmas Party… to Host a Math Bee!

by Meghann Whistler, author of The Baby’s Christmas Blessing

When I was ten, my family moved across the country. I was a shy kid, and I was put into a split classroom where there were only three other kids my age. Needless to say, I had trouble making friends.

That Christmas, in an effort to help me and my little sister fit in better, my mom organized a cookie decorating party for us and all of the kids from our split class at school. She baked tons of gingerbread men and sugar cookies and bought lots of icing, sprinkles, and other goodies for us to use.

Of course, when you have a roomful of kids hopped up on Christmas cookies, things can get a little loud. My dad, coming home from work into all this chaos, decided that the surest way to make everyone calm down was to get us all to stand in a straight line in the front hallway…so he could quiz us on our times tables!!! 😆

The best part? The prize he was offering the winner was…wait for it…a quarter!!! And he just couldn’t understand why no one was very enthusiastic about this “fun” game.

My sister and I were mortified, and the party broke up soon after. We never asked our mom to host another Christmas party, but the things that don’t go perfectly are usually the ones that are the most memorable, and we get the biggest laughs when we tell the story of that long-ago Christmas cookie party now!

Interesting story line. I love sugar cookies. When didn’t my parents embarrass me?! lol My father called me goober which I hated and all the kids made fun

  2. Anne

This story sounds captivating and wonderful. Shortbread cookies are my favorite. My parents did embarrass me many times and it was sometimes difficult. The father meant well and it is a delightful story to learn about. He was fun and entertaining and thought up a unique game.

My favorite Christmas cookie hands down has to be the cut out sugar cookie decorated with color icing. Why? Because it brings back such sweet memories of my brother and I spending hours exchanging bowls of colored icing decorating the cookies Mom let us cut out from the dough she made and then decorate. Mom was one smart cookie – finding a way to keep us from bickering while being productive during the days out of school for the holidays. 🙂 I also love the Mexican wedding cookies and the pressed cookies for the memories they bring back of Mom in the kitchen and telling us we had to wait until they cooled down to start eating.

My parents did show emotions including hugging right up until their passing. It was something we knew was going to happen regardless of who was around and honestly I can’t think of a time that it embarrassed me or that it bothered me. It was just the way it was. I know that I’d give anything to have it happen to me now at 70 years old.
