Darkness comes in many forms.

Raelyn is about to encounter them all.

Hidden away in the Schade Catacombs, a single portal remains in Alnok. And, pushed to near defeat, Cosyn has unleashed all his forces, taking Earth to the brink of a world war. Raelyn, in the midst of her own debilitating doubt, finds a new ally. But when no one will follow, she strikes out on her own, determined to reach the catacombs and close the portal. Only then can she finally return home.

In the far north, her mentor and guide Kade, wounded and desperate, leads a band of soldiers, also on a path to the catacombs.

As an impenetrable darkness falls on the realm of Alnok and Earth’s annihilation seems inevitable, Raelyn finds nothing is what it seems. Her calling, her newfound skills, even her reason for being in Alnok are shrouded in uncertainty.

But she must uncover the light in the darkness of Alnok, and her own heart, to locate and destroy Cosyn’s last link to Earth. If she fails, she will have no home to return to.

When Raelyn Witt enters the fifth dimension of Alnok, she takes her bravery, loyalty, and her uncanny ability to see what others overlook to combat the evil attacking her family. But she also takes her fears, uncertainties, and a deep secret for which she knows she’ll never earn forgiveness and one that threatens everything she goes to Alnok to accomplish.

The middle child of loving, but busy parents, Raelyn desperately wants to make them proud. But she feels outshined by a talented artistic older brother and her younger brother, the sports star. As a writer in grad school, she spends more time watching and listening than seeking the center of attention. Great for making up stories, not so great for making friends. It makes for a lonely life, and one with too much time for self-reflection.

At Raelyn’s core, she is seeking forgiveness and longing for a sense of her worth. We’ve all been there. Are we good enough? Have we messed up too much?

It’s her mentor, Kade, who gives her the answer as they avoid the enemy and share a moment of reprieve:

“Why so little faith?” Kade asked, his voice quiet, but not accusatory.

“Faith? In what?” Bitterness filled Raelyn’s words. They passed through the doorway side-by-side.

“In your ability.”

“I—” She didn’t know how to respond . . .

“You said before” [she continued] “that I needed to forgive myself.” She waited for him to say something meaningless like, “It wasn’t your fault,” or “Bad things happen.”

“There is belief by some that forgiveness is earned, yes?”

Raelyn nodded.

“But at what point is forgiveness deserved? One good deed? Twenty? One hundred?” Kade stopped and so did Raelyn. She looked into his eyes, deep pools of blue. He moved his hand to her face. Raelyn flinched as he reached her temple. He paused. She relaxed her shoulders and leaned her head into his palm, allowing him to completely cover the ragged scar that ran down the left side of her face.

“No, daughter. Forgiveness is given. As freely as the forgiver wishes. Your worth is not determined by your deeds. The good . . . nor the bad.”

Raelyn had to learn to let go of her past and accept the forgiveness that was already offered to her.
