Baking Up Christmas Memories
by Jill Kemerer, author of The Mistletoe Favor
Can you smell that? It’s peanut-buttery and chocolatey and warm and gooey. Yes, it’s December and I’m baking!
I have an assortment of goodies I bake every year. My mother’s sour cream sugar cookies are a must. With a hint of nutmeg, they bring back so many good memories of baking them as a child. In my mind, it was always snowing—we lived in mid-Michigan where you tend to get a lot of snow—and my sister and Mom and I had so much fun rolling out the dough and cutting out the cookies. We finished them off with a simple icing. They tasted delicious!
Here is a similar recipe (I halve this and add a little nutmeg):

Another staple was fudge. I make a super-simple recipe you probably are familiar with. You just melt chocolate chips and a can of sweetened condensed milk together, add a little vanilla extract and a pinch of salt and it’s done. Easy!
Here is the recipe (I add a pinch of salt):

My family loves peanut blossoms. They’re the peanut butter cookies with a Hershey’s kiss in the middle. I make them every year, and every year we devour them. They are SO good.

For the past couple of years, I’ve made dark chocolate cookies with a chocolatey mint center. Basically, I bake the dark chocolate cookie, and as soon as they’re out of the oven, I place an Andes mint in the center. We all love these, too.
Here’s the inspiration recipe (I modified it to skip the coating, and I place a chocolate mint in the center after they’re baked):

Whatever treats I make, I know we’ll enjoy them. And if I try a new recipe and it’s not so great? I won’t make it again. No biggie!
What baked goods bring out the Christmas memories for you?
Thank you for hosting me today, Carrie!

For me it is homemade Christmas cookies, especially chocolate chip and Nana’s bar cookies

Definitely sugar cookies. We had so much fun cutting them out and adding all the decorations to make them as snowmen or Christmas trees.
Costco’s fruitcake reminded me of my mom but they no longer sell it.
