Butterflies bring them together but will love capture her heart?

Georgiana Linfield is a lady biologist who is determined to travel the world. Upon arriving in London for the Season, she decides the best way to fulfil her dreams is to find an amenable husband to indulge her every whim. Refusing to give up her interest in natural history for a dull domestic life, she sets out to forge a different path for herself.

When her father’s elderly cousin asks her to set his natural history collection in order, she accepts his request with joy. However, the task brings her into almost daily contact with his godson, Sir Giles Tavistock, a renowned entomologist, who regards her with some suspicion. When Sir Giles discovers her skills as a scientific illustrator, he asks her to sketch his South American butterfly collection, and they forge an uneasy truce.

Their tenuous connection is shattered, however, when Sir Giles believes a rumour casting Georgiana in a far from flattering light. Vowing to have nothing more to do with him, she keeps him at a distance. But when the baronet’s butterflies attract unwanted attention, a series of events unravel that make Georgiana wonder if the famous collector might have done the impossible and captured her heart.

Other Books In This Series

Georgiana Linfield may share her father & brother’s interest in the sciences – particularly in the field of biology & entomology – unlike her novelist sister Harriet whom we met in the previous book. But this doesn’t mean that Georgiana is perfectly content in her situation. In fact, she desperately longs to be free to travel the world in scientific exploration.

Sir Giles Tavistock’s first encounter with Georgiana ends rather ingloriously with an ‘oops-didn’t-mean-for-you-to-overhear-that-early-assumption-of-you’ faux pas worthy of Mr. Darcy himself. And, for that matter, there are definite Pride & Prejudice vibes between Giles & Georgiana throughout much of The Baronet’s Lady Biologist, with a delicious helping of suppressed romantic tension that fuels some super-swoony kisses, too. As I did in The Viscount’s Lady Novelist (still my fave of the series), I enjoyed getting both Giles & Georgiana’s points of view as it allows readers to stay ahead of the misunderstandings and see into their true feelings. To me, this adds to the swooniness and the layered nature of the story and keeps me invested from start to finish.

Bottom Line: From the gorgeous butterflies that flit across these pages to the yummy romance and a bit of intrigue, there is much to love about The Baronet’s Lady Biologist by Alissa Baxter. Sir Giles is a dashing hero and Georgiana is his perfect match, though their own insecurities and mistaken assumptions manage to get in the way of a happily-ever-after for most of the book. The times they do give in to their feelings – however momentarily – result in some toe-curling kisses full of all that suppressed chemistry and emotion. Interested to see what the author writes next, and my vote is a romance for Georgiana’s brother Steven!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. In the interest of full disclosure, the company I freelance for as a blog/review tour coordinator was hired to promote this book with a social media tour. This in no way affected my review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4 stars / enjoyed it!

KissingBook Level: 3+ / will forget to breathe on occasion

Reviewer’s Note: Readers of this blog may want to be aware that there are a couple of minor curse words in this novel, but it is certainly still what I consider to be a clean read.

Alissa Baxter wrote her first Regency romance during her long university holidays. After travelling the world, she settled down to write her second Regency novel, which was inspired by her time living on a country estate in England. Alissa then published two chick lit novels, The Truth About Clicking Send and Receive (previously published as Send and Receive) and The Truth About Cats and Bees (previously published as The Blog Affair).

Many years later, Alissa returned to her favourite period with her Linfield Ladies Series, a trio of Regency romances that feature women in trend-setting roles who fall in love with men who embrace their trailblazing ways…at least eventually. Alissa currently lives in Johannesburg with her husband and two sons. She is a member of The Beau Monde – Regency Fiction Writers.
