“Brimming with suspense and adventure, Captured Secrets, is a love story I’ll not soon forget. An engrossing tale with all the twists and turns that make a contemporary Western so hard to put down.” Debra Whiting Alexander, award-winning author of Zetty

After her parents die in a horrific car accident, Sydney Moomaw is thrust into running their guest ranch in eastern Washington. She soon discovers that her parents were keeping secrets. Why is the ranch in serious debt? Why did her parents allow the insurance to lapse? Why didn’t they tell her about it? And where are their wills? Sydney needs to figure out a way to save the ranch she loves before her sister sells it.

Photographer Trey Hardy arrives at the ranch the same day Sydney’s parents are killed. His working-vacation plans change when he decides to help Sydney save her ranch. But, his offers to help are met with resistance. Her stubbornness and independence are both maddening and alluring.

Amid the tangle of finances, tensions with her sister, and her own grief and anger, Sydney begins receiving threatening notes. They must be from her abusive ex-husband, but he’s in jail. Isn’t he? When a teenager appears at the ranch insisting she is Sydney’s daughter, Sydney finally realizes she’s going to have to start trusting people to help her. Will Trey’s plan work? Can they save her beloved ranch? Can she really have the life she’s dreamed of?

Hi Carmen! Welcome to the blog!

Carmen: Summer for sure. Though the sparkle of snow holds winter beauty, I prefer warmer temperatures. And as a horse owner, I love a good trail ride in the mountains. I also enjoy outdoor water sports and camping with my family.

Carrie: i am the exact opposite haha

Carmen: Mountains because there is so much more to experience: various trees, vivid hues and alluring scents of wildflowers, trickling streams, horseback riding, wildlife, and the reflection of it all in a smooth-as-glass lake.

Carrie: i completely agree!

Carmen: Board games. My grandkids and I play all the time. We get pretty competitive, and its so much fun!

Carrie: we do the same with our nieces & nephews 🙂

Carmen: Print. I prefer print books, hands down. The smell and feel of the pages are something ebooks cannot duplicate.

Carrie: so true!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Carmen: Writing. The entire process is a rush. I love research, creating engaging characters, and putting them in situations that make them grow. And nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment than holding the galley copy in my hands.

Carrie: i bet!!

Q: Which books are “on your nightstand”?

Carmen: The books on my nightstand include: Kidnapped in Texas by Virginia Vaughan, Dear Henry, Love Edith by Becca Kinzer, and Present Danger by Elizabeth Goddard. I have many, many more, but these are at the top of my pile.

Carrie: I want to read those first two as well – and I loved Present Danger! And I know the feeling of the many many books on the TBR pile haha

Q: Do you have any strange writing habits/quirks? Any snacks/beverages that are a must when you sit down to write?

Carmen: I recently switched to a standing desk because one of my legs kept hurting. At first, my feet ached, but then a few friends suggested I look into getting a kitchen mat. I did and after a few days (when my body got used to the switch as well) all my back, leg, and feet pain vanished. While writing I enjoy, tea, water, nuts, fruit, and veggies. Yes, I’m a health nut.

Carrie: that’s really interesting about the pain going away with the standing desk & a kitchen mat!

Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote Captured Secrets?

Carmen: I listen to Native flute music as I write my books. I’m married to a Native man and we live on a reservation in eastern Washington state. The music is soothing and often jumpstarts my creative process because I find myself relaxed.

Carrie: that IS really soothing music!

Q: If Hollywood wanted to produce Captured Secrets as a movie, who would you want to be cast as the lead roles?

Carmen: For the heroine, I’d like Kimberly Guerrero because she’s a beautiful Native actress from the same reservation my husband is a member of. Her role in “The Cherokee Word for Water” was impressive. For the hero, I’m thinking Jesse Metcalfe. He’s simply gorgeous and plays a great cowboy character.

Carrie: ooo i like those choices!!

Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote Captured Secrets?

Carmen: God reminded me that He is always in control. When He says He will strengthen us; lead, guide, and direct us, He does; and when we give our dreams to Him, He blesses them. He’s healed my broken heart while writing Captured Secrets because it’s inspired by my niece’s murder. He’s strengthened me and shown me that He is who He says He is. God has proven time and again that I can trust Him through the entire creative process, from the spark of an idea to the published book. He taught me that I can trust Him in all and every situation.

Carrie: Amen ♥

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Carmen: Book two and three of the Seven Tine Ranch Romance are in various publishing stages. I’m also in the process of nailing down my research and will soon begin a rodeo queen series. One can’t go wrong with strong, talented female characters and handsome cowboys!

I enjoyed the interview, and it’s always fun to learn that the author reads the same books that her readers enjoy. I’m intrigued by all the questions Sydney faces.
