Author Interview (and a Giveaway!): Christy Barritt & Fractured Lies

I’m delighted to have Christy Barritt here on the blog today to talk about her brand new romantic suspense (and the start of a new Lantern Beach series), Fractured Lies!

USA Today has called Christy Barritt’s books “scary, funny, passionate, and quirky.”

Christy writes both mystery and romantic suspense novels that are clean with underlying messages of faith. Her books have sold more than three million copies and have won the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery, have been twice nominated for the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award, and have finaled for both a Carol Award and Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year.

She is married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy is a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado.

Hi Christy! Welcome back to the blog!

Christy: Audiobooks. I love listening to books as I take my daily walk around the neighborhood or as I’m driving.

Carrie: so does my husband!

Christy: Over. It’s clearly the superior way. 🙂

Carrie: haha!

Christy: Coke. However, I haven’t drank any soda for eight years! I gave it up for health reasons and haven’t looked back.

Carrie: oh man, you’re my hero! I know I should quit drinking Diet Coke but so far I haven’t been able to.

Christy: Ocean. One of my favorite places in the whole world is the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Carrie: that’s on my list of places I want to visit 🙂

Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?

Christy: Mandie from the series by Lois Gladys Leppard. I loved reading about her adventures. Nancy Drew would be a close second. 🙂

Carrie: i loved the Mandie books!!! And of course Nancy Drew.

Q: If I sneaked a peek in your purse right now (which I would never do, I promise!), what would it tell me about you?

Christy: That I’m slightly messy and disorganized. You’ll find receipts and bubble gum wrappers and probably some loose change at the bottom. My wallet is pretty organized, however—I like having my finances in order. 🙂 I also have a small leather-bound notebook where I jot notes, but if someone were to see these notes, they’d make no sense to anyone but me. And practically speaking, I always carry a bottle of water, my keys, and Carmex.

Carrie: Carmex is essential for me in the winter!

Q: Which of your main characters in Fractured Lies is most like you?

Christy: Rachel Atwood is a scientist. She’s also an introvert, she loves drinking turmeric tea, and she enjoys playing Scrabble at night. My husband and I have a new routine at night where we drink herbal tea and play Scrabble. It beats eating junk food and watching too much TV. 🙂

Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing Fractured Lies, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?

Christy: I always let the characters dictate the story. I plan on my book by plotting out three or four chapters at a time. Because of this, I have to do a lot more rewriting, but it’s still a lot more fun to write this way and “discover” the story as I go.

Carrie: that does sound like a fun process!

Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote Fractured Lies?

Christy: This series will explore science and religion. Can the two walk hand in hand? Can a scientist also have faith and believe in God? It’s a subject that’s always fascinated me, and I’m excited to be able to explore this more through the Lantern Beach Exposure series.

Christy: Lantern Beach Exposure will be a multi-book series featuring both old and new characters from the fictional North Carolina island. One thread will stretch throughout all the books—a new lab that has opened on the island. I also have a new Fog Lake trilogy releasing in the fall and a few other surprises for my readers. 🙂
