Trinity Knight is not a fan of professional wrestling. But with her husband gone, it falls to her to give their son the father-son trip they daydreamed about when he was alive. After Trinity causes them to miss a meet and greet with Jay’s favorite wrestler, a random act of kindness saves the trip and starts Trinity on an unexpected path.

Universal Wrestling Organization Champion Blane Sterling hears whiny children at photo ops all the time. However, overhearing a young boy comfort his mother piques his interest. Touched by their story, Blane works with the UWO Public Relations team to give Jay the experience of a lifetime.

As they learn each other’s stories, Trinity and Blane are drawn to each other. But they don’t just come from different states. They live in different worlds. Trinity might learn to fit into his life, but can those in her world look beyond Blane’s profession to see his heart? Or will a lack of acceptance cause Trinity and Blane to lose their shot at love?

While part of Love in the Squared Circle is set in Tennessee, Trinity and Jay live in Cape Girardeau, MO. Cape is a typical midwestern town of around 40,000 people. It’s home to SEMO, Southeast Missouri State University, and parts of the city feel like a college town. But there’s more to it than that.

Only forty-five minutes from where I live, Cape is the perfect day trip. There are nice parks and typical shopping opportunities with a mall and the big name stores you’d expect. Andy and I rarely take advantage of those. Instead, we head to the riverfront where you can watch the barges and even a few riverboats go by.

Along the riverfront, streets of small-town American charm offer quaint shops. While some storefronts are empty, there are many local eateries, ice cream and coffee shops, home décor and gift stores, and clothing and antique shops. The businesses have kept the original architecture giving the area that “big city girl goes back to her hometown and falls in love with the hunky handyman while sipping cocoa next to the town Christmas tree” vibe.

Cape does an admirable job drawing people to the riverfront with various seasonal activities. Their holiday decorations are beautiful too. We love going to Cape for a good meal before spending the afternoon wandering through the antique shops. We do veer away from the riverfront long enough to visit my favorite used bookstore, The Book Rack. With a large selection of Christian fiction, I always leave with an armful.

One of my favorite restaurants is Katy O’Ferrell’s. Ireland tops my list of places to visit if I ever get to travel. So, I love sitting in their main room listening to Irish music and perusing the pictures of Ireland as I wait for my food. The shepherd’s pie is great, and their bread pudding is amazing. I mean it. It’s a life-changing dessert.

Andy and I have added several restaurants to our list of frequented eateries in Cape, but Katy’s was the first. That’s why I included it in Love in the Squared Circle. One of my favorites had to be Trinity’s favorite. I had no choice.

While I don’t use the creamier, mushroom based sauce Katy O’Ferrell’s uses for my shepherd’s pie, I do have a recipe I use at home. It’s a favorite of my husband, and everyone who tries it loves it. I’ve tweaked the recipe to make it easy and make it my own. I hope you enjoy it!

Busy Day Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients:
2T olive oil,
1 cup chopped yellow onion,
1lb. ground turkey,
2tsp dried parsley leaves,
1tsp dried rosemary leaves,
1tsp dried thyme leaves,
½tsp salt,
½tsp black pepper,
1T Worcestershire sauce,
2 garlic cloves, minced,
2T flour,
2T tomato paste,
1C beef broth,
1C frozen peas and carrots,
1C frozen corn,
1 large package butter and herb instant mashed potatoes,
1/4C parmesan cheese

Directions: Preheat oven to 400° F. Heat oil in skillet on medium/high heat. Add onions. Cook 5 minutes. Add meat, herbs, salt and pepper. Brown throughout. Add Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Cook, stirring, for one minute. Add flour and tomato paste. Stir until well-blended and clump free. Add broth and vegetables. Bring to boil. Reduce heat. Simmer 5 minutes. Set aside.

While skillet mixture is cooking, make mashed potatoes according to the directions on the package. Mix in parmesan cheese. Set aside.

Pour meat mixture into a 9 x 9 pan. Spread evenly. Spoon on mashed potatoes. Spread evenly over meat mixture. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

  1. This is an awesome novel!! I tell everyone that it was the novel I didn’t expect to like,–because wrestling–but would read because I love Heather. Then I read it. AND I LOVED IT! 🙂 Truly, a great story of love and acceptance!

    • exactly! That’s what I’m hearing from our reviewers this week – don’t like wrestling, didn’t expect to like it, but they love it!!

I’m so glad to hear that. While I know it’s not your typical Christian romance pairing, I loved writing Blane and Trinity’s story. Thank you for sharing about it.

  2. Roxanne C.

I enjoyed reading about the author’s favorite places to frequent when she goes to Cape Girardeau, MO. I’d prefer those to the mall, too.
