THE SHIFTING CURRENT by Dani Pettrey
SERIES: Coastal Guardians novella
GENRE: Christian Romantic Suspense
PUBLISHER: Gracie & Johnny Inc.
RELEASE DATE: May 2, 2023
PAGES: 210
An elusive killer. A false identity. A deadly maze of lies.
When Coast Guard Investigative Service Special Agent LOGAN PERRY’s beloved grandfather is murdered, Logan races to his hometown of Cauldron Creek, New Mexico to investigate the murder. His teammate and friend, EMMY THORTON, insists on joining him. Not a good idea—not when he loves her, but carries a secret that he knows will tear them apart.
Emmy knows Logan will pursue the investigation no matter the cost, and she won’t let the man she loves plunge into a dangerous situation alone. She needs to be at his side, even if he believes friendship is her only reason for joining him.
What looks like a robbery gone wrong rapidly shifts, drawing Emmy and Logan into a dizzying maze where nothing is as it appears. Every lead slips through their fingers as threats against them grow deadlier at each turn. Having only each other to rely on, their love for one another deepens, but will they live long enough to admit their attraction to each other?
They’re in the killer’s sights. One wrong move puts their future together and their lives on the line.

the shifting current playlist
by Dani Pettrey, author of The Shifting Current
I’m a visual, kinetic and auditory learner. When I write, I like to work with all three learning styles. For the visual side of me, I make collages or Pinterest boards. For the kinetic side, I make index cards for my scenes and lay them out like puzzle pieces on the floor or I work with sticky notes and a poster board. For the auditory side of me, I love making playlists. First is an instrumental playlist for me to listen to as I write the first draft and I add to it as songs come to me. Here’s one of my favorite instrumental songs to write to.
The Secret Life of Daydreams from the Pride and Prejudice Soundtrack
Once I have a full draft of my story, I know my characters better and I can see their full story like a movie in my head, then I add songs like a movie soundtrack. I pick songs that reflect where the characters are when the story opens, where they are struggling and what their faith journey is like at the time. Then I add songs that reflect their romantic feelings for one another towards the beginning of the book all the way through their deep love story at the end. I even add in some suspense-full music to keep that emotion of the story going. Then I weave the full soundtrack together and listen to it while I’m working on revisions. It really helps get me into the story. I had a great time picking songs for my latest book, The Shifting Current, which just released 12 days ago.
I absolutely loved telling Emmy and Logan’s story. There was just something about this couple, about their friendship and support of one another through good times, but particularly through hardship that really spoke to me. Here are a few of their songs. I hope you enjoy!
Emmy & Logan
Oh My Dear by Tenth Avenue North hits home the very most for these two as Logan has carried a tragic secret with him for as long as he can remember and this song reminds me of when he trusts Emmy enough to share it with her.
God Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts. Coming to this place between Logan and Emmy has been a long time coming and they both finally realized God has brought them to this very point.
Through All of It by Colton Dixon really speaks to Logan’s struggle through the years, but his final acceptance and awe that God has been with him every step of the way. Even bringing him Em. This video really shares some amazing testimonies too.
Wildfire by Seafret I love this song that shares how, for Logan, it’s always been Em.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this sneak peek at Emmy and Logan’s playlist. The full one will be ready and launched on my website on May 25th. Hope you’ll come by and check it at www.danipettrey.com and I’ll share it on social media as well.
Thanks so much for spending this time with me, Logan and Emmy today. And many thanks to Carrie for hosting me again.
Have a blessed day!
