If she stays…
Will he stay too?
From sand in his shoes to a gecko eating his dinner, Theo Fairfax is way outside his comfort zone in Hawai’i. Sent to convince pilot Sydney Calvert to sell the tour company she just inherited, he finds himself being won over by the tight-knit community, the natural wonders and Sydney’s free-spirited beauty. Could exploring their growing feelings lead to a future as magical as a tropical sunset?

Oh my goodness, y’all. This book made me smile big. Ok… THEO specifically made me smile big. This endearingly nerdy hero would rather spend time with numbers and spreadsheets than on the beach, even in as beautiful a place as Hawai’i, and to watch Sydney (and the whole island really) drag him out of his comfort zone was just so much fun. Reading his sister’s reaction to these changes was a lot of fun too. I also never thought I would find a gecko adorable, but this author has accomplished that with Noodles… though perhaps it’s Theo’s perspective on Noodles that makes the little gecko so adorable. It all comes back to Theo lol
Theo isn’t the only one who’s getting rid of some preconceived ideas or long-held plans in Her Island Homecoming. When we first meet Sydney, as the story opens, she has returned to Nalani for her brother’s memorial service but is eager to get back to South Carolina and her plans to open her own flight school. A surprise inheritance, however, keeps her on the island a bit longer than intended as she figures out how to honor her brother’s wishes and chase her own dreams at the same time. I loved watching Theo capture Sydney’s heart – and vice versa – but I also loved watching the island capture her heart again. In the process, it captured mine, too. The people made me want to hug them all… or laugh out loud … or just stalk them until they befriend me. Everyone from Sydney’s close circle of friends to ‘extras’ who call the island home was so compelling and – you guessed it – made me smile big. (Also, have I mentioned lately how endearing Theo is?!?)
Bottom Line: Her Island Homecoming by Anna J. Stewart may open with a memorial service, but even that scene is so full of love and hope that it starts the book out on a positive note, odd as that may sound. I fell head over heels for the island of Nalani and its people – but especially Sydney, Theo, and a gecko named Noodles. Great banter, witty humor, and affectionate warmth set the ideal tone for this series starter, and (yep, you guessed it) I smiled a lot while reading it. Oh, and the first kiss is just so perfect for these characters that I’m grinning now just thinking about it – it will be a kiss I refer to often in my future KissingBooks discussions. I cannot wait for more books in this series and more time spent with these characters!
Reviewer’s Note: Readers of this blog may want to be aware that there is a same sex couple as tertiary characters (mostly mentioned in passing).
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)
My Rating: 4.5 stars / loved it!
KissingBook Level: 3+ / will forget to breathe on occasion
