Hi Cari! Welcome back to the blog!
Cari: Apples. In fact, I just had a craving for an apple dessert last week and I was on the hunt for a good apple dessert recipe. Ended up with the classic: apple pie. But there’s nothing better than biting into a crisp apple any time of the year.
Carrie: so true! And a yummy apple pie never hurts either 🙂
Cari: Both – our family has included cats and dogs over the years. How’s that for not taking sides? Except I can say that my dog currently holds a massive portion of my heart.
Carrie: great answer!
Cari: This one is easy. Tea all the way. I drink hot green tea all day long, even in the summer months. I love tea. One of my favorite things is trying new tea blends and flavors.
Carrie: I have started dabbling in a couple of teas but I’m still on my quest to find one that’s not bitter lol
Cari: Ocean. Or a view of the ocean from the mountains. Is that cheating? I love water – love the ocean and all things water related. One of my favorite things is to read in a comfy chair on the beach.
Carrie: If wanting a view of the ocean from the mountains is cheating, then I’ll cheat too because that would be my dream place to live!
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Cari: Is there a superpower where you have multiple versions of yourself – so then one of me could cook. The other write. The other read on the beach. All at the same time. Imagine how productive it would be. If I could have a superpower, I’d want that. As for my everyday superpower, it’s probably listening. I really try to be a good, active listener.
Carrie: I would love both of those superpowers!
Q: What are some of your most cherished books?
Cari: One of my all-time favorite romance authors is Julie Garwood. I was heartbroken to learn of Julie Garwood’s passing – her books inspired me to become a romance writer. I have had all her books on my keeper shelf for years. When I need to get back to my why – the reasons I write romance and the reasons I love romance – because the writing is hard, I will reach for The Secret or Ransom or one of Julie Garwood’s books to remind myself.
Carrie: i love her romantic suspense books, and I was so sad to hear of her passing. A great loss to the book world, for sure. (note to my followers – her books are for the general market)
Q: Do you have any strange writing habits/quirks? Any snacks/beverages that are a must when you sit down to write?
Cari: I have four minions on my desk. My minions sit in front of my monitor and basically guard the word count in the corner of my screen. On the days the words are hard to come by, it can be defeating to see that word count not moving. But minions make me smile – so rather than seeing a low word count, I get to smile at my minions. As for snacks, it’s tea around the clock, gummy bears or Swedish fish and occasionally cheesecake.
Carrie: A bag of Swedish fish is one of my fave sweet snacks 😀
Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote Falling for the Cowboy Doc?
Cari: Butterflies by MAX and Never Til Now by Ashley Cooke and Brett Young. I have playlists that I listen to when I write emotional scenes and ones I listen to when I write fun scenes. I also listen to a lot of classical music when I write.
Carrie: I love that you have different playlists for different types of scenes!
Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing Falling for the Cowboy Doc, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?
Cari: I need to know what the dark moment is for my story before I start writing. The dark moment is my direction, but how I get there often changes once I start writing and the characters start becoming more three dimensional. If I don’t have an idea about the dark moment, then I wander around too much and get nowhere in my early drafts.
Carrie: ohhhh can’t we just have romance without the dark moment? lol
Q: What is one of your favorite quotes from Falling for the Cowboy Doc & why do you love it?
Cari: If you find a love that sticks when you’re at your worst, Grant, you best pay attention. That’s the important kind. This is a quote from Gran Claire – my hero’s grandmother – who always gave her five grandsons love and life advice. I like it because I believe it – love is about more than loving someone when things are perfect or when the other person is at their best. True love is about loving the whole person unconditionally.
Carrie: i love that – yes!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
