a tour of wisconsin
by Danielle Grandinetti, author of Refuge for the Archaeologist & A Father for Her Boys
Welcome to Wisconsin! I’m excited to give you a tour of this lovely state. Thank you, Carrie, for having me on your blog.
While I’m originally from the Chicagoland area, I have family roots from Wisconsin and now I call the state home. My two latest books are also set in Wisconsin. Actually most of my books are currently set in the state. But for today, we’ll explore some of the places that inspired Refuge for the Archaeologist and A Father for Her Boys.
About Refuge for the Archaeologist:
Will uncovering the truth set them free or destroy what they hold most dear?
Wisconsin, 1930—With her health in shambles and her archaeological career on the line, Cora Davis retreats to Crow’s Nest and the home of her great aunt to heal. She doesn’t think much of the missing memories from between the earthquake that caused her dizzy spells and her trip home. Until she begins remembering the danger that sent her fleeing her last dig and the person responsible.
After a decade as a ranch hand, Silas Ward returned to Crow’s Nest to provide for the women in his life. That same protective instinct propels him to Cora’s aid. But when finances dwindle, the lies and greed of others threaten to ruin his family. Unless Silas can walk the thin line of compromise. A choice that might cost him Cora’s affection.
As winter’s chill threatens, will Crow’s Nest prove a refuge, or will both Cora and Silas have no choice but to sacrifice their chance at happiness to save those they love?
Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge.
Refuge for the Archaeologist is the second book in my Harbored in Crow’s Nest historical romance series. In this story, an archaeologist and a cowboy meet in an unlikely place: Crow’s Nest, a small, fictional, fishing town on the western bank of Lake Michigan. In July, the lake would have looked something like this:
The western bank of Lake Michigan has a rich history of fishing. Refuge for the Archaeologist takes place in 1930, but I pulled a few ideas from the town of Sheboygan, which has over 170 years of waterway history. For example, the boardwalk Silas and Cora walk down could have looked like this one in Sheboygan:
Fun fact: Sheboygan is known as the Malibu of the Midwest due to it being a freshwater surf destination.
Moving inland, we encounter dairy country. The central and eastern-central area is covered in rolling hills of dairy farms. Wisconsin is known as “America’s Dairyland,” having the most dairy farms (as of 2022) in the country.
Neither Refuge for the Archaeologist nor A Father for Her Boys feature the dairy industry, but a post about Wisconsin wouldn’t be complete without talking about the industry. I did write a whole series about the 1930 dairy strikes, called the Strike to the Heart series. You can check it out here.
In A Father for Her Boys, Nathaniel offers Sofia cheese curds, a Wisconsin staple. He also mentions a local cheese shop where he buys his favorite cheese curds. There are many such shops located all over Wisconsin. However, there is one town that boasts being the Cheese Capital of the World: Plymouth.
While we’re in Plymouth, which is located in Sheboygan County, we can grab some brats or burgers because it’s the home of meat packaging companies such as Johnsonville and Old Wisconsin. When Sofia first meets Nathaniel, a small town gardener, he offers to grill out. It’s a summertime must here in the dairyland. As are flowers, seeing that winter is oh so long.
This is only a taste of what Wisconsin has to offer. I’d love for you to join Silas & Cora and Nathaniel & Sofia in experiencing more of Wisconsin in the pages of a story.

A family scarred by tragedy…
Will find hope in an unlikely gardener
A summer escape to the quaint little town of River Cove is just what auntie turned mom Sofia Russo—and her troubled, energetic nephews—needs. It’s a chance to heal from grief and her broken foot. But a surprising friendship with compassionate gardener Nathaniel Turner shows Sofia just how much she’s been missing…and how much she stands to lose when summer ends.

These books sound like interesting reads and I went briefly to Wisconsin last year. I was pleasantly surprised how nice and beautiful the state of Wisconsin was.
Thank you! I’ve always thought the same about Wisconsin.
I was born in Wisconsin, so it is a special state for me! Plus, when my parents came back from the “mission field”, Paraguay, South America, where they were missionaries for more than 36 years, and where my brother and I also grew up, working with primitive Indian tribes, my parents made Wisconsin their “base.” So, over the years, even though we still live in Montana, almost yearly, my husband and I, would visit them in Wisconsin, which was a real blessing 🙂 They’ve both gone on to be with the Lord, and we still miss them very much. My brother continues the work with the tribe in Paraguay, while I continue to live in Montana, where my husband is a minister, and where we keep on trying to reach souls for the Lord. Thanks for the opportunity to enter a giveaway! Would love to win a print book! As a pastor’s wife, and on a small budget, would sure appreciate a wonderful print book! God bless!
