by Heidi McCahan, author of Her Alaskan Companion

Welcome to Alaska! I’m thrilled to take you on this virtual tour of my home state. I’ve been in North Carolina for many years but lived in Alaska from 1977 until I moved away to attend college in the mid-’90s. Alaska will always hold a special place in my heart, which is why I’m delighted to write books set in the great 49th state.

When my editor at Love Inspired encouraged me to start a series set in Alaska, I got to work dreaming up a unique small town. An online article about heart-shaped rocks washing up on the beaches of Fox Island near Kenai, Alaska caught my attention. Suddenly I had the inspiration I needed to create the fictional setting of Orca Island and the community of Hearts Bay.

My teenage years were spent in a small coastal town on Prince William Sound, and although I’ve never been to Kodiak Island, I felt it was a fantastic real location to research. So I drew on personal experience and online stories and photos to write my Home to Hearts Bay series.

Here are 3 fun facts about Kodiak and Alaska:

  • A Russian explorer named Stephan Glotov gets the credit for discovering the island in 1763. He called it “Kad’yak”. Fifteen years later, British Explorer James Cook arrived on the scene and renamed the island Kodiak.
  • Alaska is the only state’s name that you can type completely using the middle line of your QWERTY keyboard.
  • Kodiak is home to the world-famous grizzly bear, one of the planet’s largest species of bears, often weighing in at 1,000 pounds. Not an animal you want to encounter on your wilderness hike! That’s why I’m including a super cute photo for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

Today, I’d like to share more about Her Alaskan Companion, the fourth book in the series. It’s also part of Love Inspired’s continuity series called K-9 Companions. Here’s the blurb:

Romance isn’t the plan…until a mischievous dog changes everything.

When pregnant widow Lexi Thomas moves to Alaska for a fresh start, the last thing on her mind is romance. Fortunately her neighbor’s affectionate goldendoodle is the distraction she needs—unlike his gruff owner. Police officer Heath Donovan hopes building a fence in exchange for pet sitting will keep Lexi at a distance. But when his unruly dog turns matchmaker, can he face his biggest fear for a shot at love?

Residents on Kodiak Island experience a lot of fog, wind, and rain. It’s a commercial fishing port and home to the largest United States Coast Guard base. I often use weather as a plot device in my novels, and an island in the blustery Pacific Ocean gave me plenty of material to work with.

Lexi, the heroine of Her Alaskan Companion, is a photographer looking to grow her business and save some money because she’s a widow who is also expecting her first baby. Since she moved from Georgia to Hearts Bay, I had a lot of fun “showing” her the island. Of course, Heath felt the need to protect her, so he insists on accompanying her while she explores. No spoilers here, but one of my favorite scenes involves Heath, Lexi, and Heath’s dog Scout going on a hike to see a beautiful waterfall.

When my editor told me Her Alaskan Companion would be part of the K-9 Companions series, I was thrilled! Books about dogs sell well + this story is set in Alaska, so I’m anticipating readers will really enjoy it. The editorial and marketing teams always ask for authors’ input regarding cover design. We’d already agreed on the title, so I knew Lexi would likely be the featured human. I had a good time searching for a stock photo image that best represented the imaginary version of Scout the goldendoodle. Here’s the photo I submitted:

I’m delighted with the final cover design of Her Alaskan Companion and I can’t wait for you to meet Heath, Lexi, and Scout too.

One more fun and true story to share: a photo of my family posing near our own special rock. (I’m the cute fashionably dressed blond on the rock). When the highway department upgraded the road in front of our lodge, they insisted on pushing this boulder into our yard. My grandparents and parents were not thrilled, but my grandfather turned it into a marketing opportunity. Every summer our family photo was taken in front of The World’s Largest Pet Rock. As an elementary school kid, I became an entrepreneur who convinced the dog to climb up there with me. I’d charge tourists money to take our photo. Pretty clever, right?

Thanks so much for taking this mini-tour. At over 660,000 square miles, Alaska is the largest state in our union. It’s impossible to see the whole glorious place in one trip. For now, enjoy a vicarious experience through the pages of a book. Her Alaskan Companion is on sale starting July 25th, so get your copy from your favorite bookseller.
