Please join me in welcoming Jill Piscitello to the blog today to chat about her cozy mystery, A Sour Note! I enjoyed this book last month and look forward to more in the series!
Jill Piscitello is a teacher, author, and an avid fan of multiple literary genres. Although she divides her reading hours among several books at a time, a lighthearted story offering an escape from the real world can always be found on her nightstand.
A native of New England, Jill lives with her family and three well-loved cats. When not planning lessons or reading and writing, she can be found spending time with her family, trying out new restaurants, traveling, and going on light hikes.
A SOUR NOTE by Jill Piscitello
SERIES: A Music Box Mystery #1
GENRE: Cozy Mystery (Clean)
PUBLISHER: The Wild Rose Press, Inc.
RELEASE DATE: June 26, 2023
On the heels of a public, broken engagement, Maeve Cleary returns to her childhood home in Hampton Beach, NH. When a dead body turns up behind her mother’s music school, three old friends land on the suspect list. Licking her wounds soon takes a back seat to outrunning the paparazzi who spin into a frenzy, casting her in a cloud of suspicion. Maeve juggles her high school sweetheart, a cousin with a touch of clairvoyance, a no-nonsense detective, and an apologetic, two-timing ex-fiancé.
Will the negative publicity impact business at the Music Box— the very place she’d hoped to make a fresh start?
Hi Jill! Welcome to the blog!
Jill: Apples. I eat an apple almost daily. I enjoy most varieties and like that it takes a while to reach the core.
Carrie: me too! Apples are my fave fruit 🙂
Jill: Cats. I have three much-adored felines. I grew up with dogs and loved them as well. But as an adult, I’ve never felt that my schedule would be fair to a dog.
Carrie: that’s true – cats are much more flexible with their humans’ schedules than dogs are.
Jill: Ocean. There is something hypnotic and calming about sitting in front of the ocean and watching the tide flow in and out.
Carrie: isn’t it amazing how something so powerful can be so soothing?
Jill: Sandwich. I’m always hungry soon after eating soup. I can make a sandwich out of almost anything with zero cooking required.
Carrie: haha valid points! 🙂
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Jill: This is a difficult question. I think it would be cool to time travel as long as I had full control of the where and when.
Carrie: yes that would be a very important parameter to set for me too!
Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?
Jill: I always head for the new releases. I guess I’m a sucker for a good floor display with enticing covers and so many books I haven’t read yet.
Carrie: same… no matter how many books are in my TBR galaxy lol
Q: Which snacks/beverages are a must when you sit down to write?
Jill: I always have a snack container filled with a variety of nuts, peanut butter pretzels, and a piece of chocolate. Water and dandelion tea are also must-haves.
Carrie: hmmm i’ve never heard of dandelion tea – sounds interesting!
Q: What surprised you about A Sour Note or your characters as you wrote their story?
Jill: Maeve’s Cousin Calista was supposed to play a minor supporting role but fought tooth and nail to insert herself as the main character. She will certainly make her voice heard and share more of her story in the sequel.
Carrie: haha i could see a spinoff series with Calista too 🙂
Q: Some authors like to hide little things in their stories. Is there anything you have hidden in A Sour Note?
Jill: I hide name references in my books. I enjoy naming characters after favorite book, television, and movie characters. For example, I paid homage to The Facts of Life’s Edna Garrett with Daphne Garrett, an employee at The Music Box. And Finn Keaton received his name thanks to the Keaton family from Family Ties. There are countless Easter eggs such as these throughout all of my books.
Carrie: oh my goodness, i love those characters even more now than i already did!
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from A Sour Note?
Jill: I hope readers enjoy a story about second chances, resilience, family, and friendship mingled with all the twists and turns of a mystery.
Carrie: i know i did 🙂
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Jill: I am currently working on the sequel to A Sour Note and am excited to share the next stop on Maeve’s journey.
