A kidnapped child. An unsolved cold case.

Only this time officer Ruby Orton and her K-9 partner, Pepper, rescue the child. But as the kidnappers escalate to murder and target Nick, Ruby knows there’s more behind the abduction. Together, can they find the connection with a decades-old cold case…before the past turns deadly?

First, can we all just talk about that ADORABLE cover?!? The little girl on the front looks just as endearing as the author writes Zoe on the pages inside. Her sweet three-year-old speak and precious personality wrapped themselves multiple times around my heart, and I just wanted to pick her up and hug her! The father-daughter relationship between Zoe and Nick will melt you too, and her seizure dog Goldie (an appropriately named Golden Retriever) is just as sweet.

As a matter of fact, sweet (and smart) dogs fill this story – and my happiness meter – with Pepper and the rest of the K-9 team joining Goldie on a mission to protect cutie-pie Zoe from whoever keeps trying to kidnap her. Oh yeah – and the adult human characters are great too haha. Nick Rossi is a swoony single dad who runs an outfitter in the PNW. So… technically… he could be considered a cowboy. And I’m here for that. Adorable little girl, lots of fluffy dogs, and a cowboy single dad? Yes please! For her part, officer Ruby Orton fits seamlessly into their little family, an instant bond forming between her and Zoe – and an instant attraction zinging between Ruby and Nick to match. I really liked them together and as individuals.

The suspense had me on the edge of my seat, unable to put down the book until all was said and done. Because it’s not just someone trying to kidnap Zoe… in fact, the body count keeps getting higher and nearly gets even higher than that on more than one occasion. Lots of ‘close calls’ that were much too close for comfort, and some twists that I did not see coming. And while Cold Case Revenge has its own specific case to solve, there are also a couple of story arcs that are ongoing throughout this series. This is the first of the Pacific Northwest K-9 Unit books that I’ve read, but I didn’t feel lost. What I did feel was intrigued enough to go back and catch up on the series, first chance I get.

Bottom Line: There’s a reason Jessica R. Patch is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors, and Cold Case Revenge is exhibit A. The characters came to life on the pages, the suspense exuded chilling vibes and its share of stunning turns, the romance left me smiling and swooning, and the non-preachy faith thread spoke to my heart about surrender and trusting God. This author is so talented at telling a story, and I look forward to her next book!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)
