Trace’s past collided with his present in a matter of seconds as he stood feet away from Kelsey. He shifted his attention between the front door and the grass where Kelsey sat, her leg splayed out in an uncomfortable position from her tumble. Still, all the memories threatened to showcase a lowlight reel in his mind. Everything that once was rushed back, along with the sharp reminder it was no longer the life he lived.
He rubbed his forehead to stop his mind from taking him back to an unwelcome place. He needed to focus on the situation at hand.
He latched on to her elbow and helped her stand. “Let’s go, hero.”
Despite the scowl on her face, Kelsey hadn’t changed much since college. Her auburn hair swayed in the breeze, and a spatter of freckles still covered the bridge of her nose and cheeks. She’d filled out too, and not in a bad way, but rather more toned. Those piercing green eyes still bore through him, as if she could read all his thoughts.
“I didn’t realize you worked in town.” Her voice pulled him from his thoughts.
The sun glistened behind her, high in the sky, and Trace shielded his eyes. “For a couple years now.”
“I see. Well, it’s good to see you, but I should really go find the kids. Make sure they’re okay.” She started to walk down the sidewalk, a limp evident in her step.
“You’re going to pay—pay for this, Kelsey!” Gerald’s voice echoed through the air as a cop escorted him to a waiting patrol car. “You can’t lie to me.”
Trace balled his hands into fists. What was it with men who thought they could treat a woman however they pleased? For Gerald’s sake, it was a good thing Trace wasn’t the cop handling this case.
He caught up to Kelsey and took hold of her forearm. “Hey, not so fast.” Redness permeated her cheeks as his fingers connected with her skin, but he ignored her response. “I’m still a first responder.” He motioned to his shirt. “And you need to get checked out.”
