“Stop.”
At Isaiah’s urgent warning, Addie froze. A midsize car slowly drove through the motel parking lot. It paused behind Isaiah’s car.
“Get down.”
They huddled behind the line of shrubs on the edge of the property. Addie didn’t question his direction. Ollie pressed his face into her. She held him to her. Through the thinned-out branches, she saw the passenger car door open. A man stepped out, tugged at something, then threw something that was roughly the size of a softball through the window of their room. Glass shattered.
He’d thrown a grenade.
The man jumped back into the car, and the vehicle raced off, tires squealing.
The grenade detonated, obliterating room 117.
Isaiah launched himself sideways in an attempt to shield both Addie and Ollie. Debris rained down on the parking lot, showering the new snow with dust, shards of wood, plastic and glass. The room they’d rented was a gaping hole with flames consuming what was left of the interior.
If they hadn’t left to eat breakfast, all three of them would be dead.
