Donna Gartshore guest post

by Donna Gartshore, author of Finding Their Christmas Home

Thank you for inviting me to your blog. It’s great to be here!

I love the question about playlists while writing because I am definitely someone who is inspired by music.

I should clarify that I don’t actually listen to music if I’m full board into writing I’m a person who hears the lyrics (not everyone does, I’ve discovered) so that can be rather distracting when I’m searching for my own words.

But when I am preparing to write, when I am at that beginning stage with my favorite thick-nibbed pen and a notebook that encourages me to Believe: –  I believe that the most beautiful thing is worth waiting for and the sweetest fruit takes patience – then music is my welcome companion.

I have been particularly enthralled by Taylor Swift’s Folklore lately. I think she is a wonderful storyteller and has a great sense of what makes a story work.

While I was working on the third book in my current contract, I came across a documentary on how Swift and her collaborators worked together to write the songs for Folklore. I caution a slight language warning and I am definitely not saying that I agree with all of their philosophies. But hearing them discuss their creative processes had a tremendous impact on me. It literally made my eyes fill with tears of gratitude that we have the chance to be creative people in our Creator’s world.

I sincerely can’t think of a better gift and I hope to always use it to His glory.

There are so many talented story-telling singers out there, so I know that inspiration is only a click away.

I am inspired by other things too. I love reading books that talk about the creative process, such as Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and I am continually in awe of those who have mastered the delicate balancing act of poetry.

But I am also inspired by people simply living their lives. The strength and perseverance and, yes, creativity it takes to be the best people we can be is something I consider to be remarkable.

I don’t think people need to be writers or singers or dancers to be creative. I believe we are creative when we prepare meals for our loved ones, deal with challenges that come our way and find ways to worship our Creator.

I am grateful to be able to tell stories and I am endlessly grateful for the wonderful, creative people who read them.

A second chance at love between exes always interests me. Adding young children and Christmas makes me a happier reader.
