Daughter of Cana The Shepherd's Wife A Woman of Words The Apostle's Sister The Woman from Lydia

When I began researching my novel The Shepherd’s Wife, I was surprised to discover that few first-century families in Israel kept sheep. I had assumed most families kept livestock because Jesus told so many stories about sheep, lambs, and shepherds.

I then learned that at the time, arable land was too precious to designate for farm animals because it was needed to grow crops. Families or communities might keep a few chickens and a goat for milk and cheese, but few folks kept flocks of sheep.

Shepherds and tanners were almost always unclean because they were in frequent contact with dead or sick animals. They were forbidden to enter the Temple in a state of ritual uncleanness, and no one could touch them without becoming unclean themselves. So extreme was the prejudice against shepherds that they were considered liars and not allowed to bear witness in a court of law.

But when Jesus was born, our merciful God sent holy messengers, not to kings or priests, but to shepherds. He looked out at those fields, saw the lowliest of the low, and sent heralds to invite them to meet the newborn king before anyone else.

A Moment for Wonder

What did the shepherds do after hearing this amazing news? They ran out to find Jesus, then returned to their fields, wide awake with excitement. The next day they spread the news when they delivered the day’s sacrificial animals to the Temple courtyard.

God gives everyone a voice . . . and a choice. Ask the Lord to show you how you can use both to honor Him this Christmas.
