Rita Runninghorse is about to marry the wrong guy. She has to get away from him. Now. She flees to a guest ranch in Eastern Washington State that offers a safe haven for women in need only to find the owner on a month-long speaking tour.

Robert Elliot has one thing on his mind: bronc riding. The Indian National Finals Rodeo is within reach, and he’s not about to let anything ruin his chances of going pro. Not even the woman he finds asleep in the stall of their rankest horse.

When Rita’s fiancé discovers where she’s hiding out, she takes Robert’s offer to go with him on the road and prays her fiancé gives up the hunt. Saddled together, Rita and Robert must rely on each other as they go on the road to keep her alive.

What Writing Books Means to Me

by Carmen Peone, author of Broken Bondage

Thank you for having me!

Writing books gives me the opportunity to learn new things, travel to and experience new places, and meet new people. Most of what I’ve written surrounds where I live. But I’ve also dropped my characters into Eastern Oregon, Northern Idaho, Northern Montana, and Las Vegas.

So far, I’ve been to every location my characters have wandered around in. While I won’t be able to visit all the places my future characters go, hopefully, I can at least step foot in most of the states they get to explore.

I’m looking forward to my next series, which deals with rodeo queens and rodeo cowboys. Those characters will be all over the map at various rodeos throughout the US, Canada, and maybe even Brazil. We’ll see.

Back to writing. I think the biggest reason I enjoy writing books is because I get to work with the Lord. He gives me creativity and inspires every word. When I’m stuck, all I have to do is ask for help. Sometimes He suggests I go for a horseback ride or a walk, other times He instantly gives me what I need. Many, many times, I have to work hard to get what I need. And that builds character and patience. Not much that comes easily is good, right?

If you can believe it, writing with God has deepened our relationship. I trust Him more, respect His willingness and grace more and more, and am humbled by how He has gifted me with this talent. I think all Christian writers feel this way. It’s an honor to write for Him.

Another reason I enjoy writing is because I, as a Christian romance writer, have the privilege to show readers how God intended love to be—pure and respectful. We live in a society that is backward to how God created male and female relations. Romance writers get to show readers how our characters are in control of their relational desires. We get to show readers the emotion and love behind romance. That’s pretty special.

I truly believe writing is my ministry. Through my characters, God and I touch on hard topics (domestic violence and abuse in this series). I also point to His forgiveness, grace, healing, mercy, and love. It’s always a good day when readers can find out, through fiction—romance, no less, how they can break life’s bondages.

So, yes, through my books, readers see my characters grow in their faith or help deepen other characters’ walk with God, and writing my stories deepens my own faith. God and I write together. He goes before me, and I try to keep up.

If you want to keep up with my stories, sign up for my newsletter and receive my novella, Gentling the Cowboy as a thank-you gift.

  1. Even though the author sounds fantastic, I’ll pass on this. I’m not a rodeo/horse/western romance culture reader. (Is it inappropriate to post such an honest comment? Most the books reviewed on this blog grab my attention).

  2. Roxanne C.

Broken Bondage sounds like a good contemporary romance, and I’m interested in how well Rita and Robert get along while on the road.

  3. Audrey Stewart

True To Heart Trilogy by Carmen Peone is one of my favorite book series. I’ve read it twice.
