Montana Detective Trevor West is desperate to learn what happened to his sister, who went missing in Alaska over a year ago, leaving nothing but a few photographs as clues to her whereabouts. At the advice of Police Chief Autumn Long, Trevor enlists the help of an experienced bush pilot. If Carrie James can’t help him find the places in the photographs, no one can.

But Carrie has her own agenda. Grieving the death of her closest friend and the only person she could trust, Carrie will help Trevor find his sister on one condition–that he help her track down her friend’s killer.

As the two close in on the answers they crave, they’ll face dangers and connections they could not have imagined. They’ll have to learn to trust one another–and face the dark secrets of the past–if they are ever to discover the truth and bring a killer to justice.

…I can’t think of anyone who might be after me, except the man who killed me.

Whew. I think I can relax now that I’ve read the last page of Shadows at Dusk, the newest riveting romantic suspense from Elizabeth Goddard. Maybe. But given how many times I thought that while reading the book, I’m not entirely sure I should quit looking over my shoulder now either.

The opening prologue is… well… killer. And it certainly grabbed my attention and locked it in for the rest of the book. I literally couldn’t have put down this story if I’d wanted to (which I didn’t) because I had to – HAD TO – find out how in the world Carrie (great name for a heroine!) and Trevor were going to get out of this alive. Both of them must have a bit of inner cat, given how many lives they use up during this story, but I wasn’t 100% convinced they would both survive – despite the fact that it’s a romance and I generally trust those to have a happy ending. But this is also an Alaskan suspense novel where ‘unpredictable’ reigns and, given a few other surprising twists, well, I just wasn’t sure how it would all play out in the end. Needless to say, the author does a fabulous job of keeping the suspense level high, the danger coming, and readers like me on the edge of our seats!

Bottom Line: The Alaskan wilderness, with all its dangerous beauty, is the perfect backdrop for Shadows at Dusk by Elizabeth Goddard. Carrie and Trevor are drawn into its rugged depths on a mission to find Trevor’s sister and to stay alive in the process, two things that prove more difficult than they had anticipated. I loved these two layered characters, and I loved watching them get to know each other, trust each other, and fall in love. They are both very heroic characters, but also relatably human. The faith message – that God is with us when we pass through the difficult seasons of life that crash over us – is solid and flows naturally from the characters and their situations, without being preachy or forced. I cannot wait for book three in this captivating missing persons series of books!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4.5 stars / riveting novel!

    This looks great!
I’ve actually been trying to write a novel set in Alaska. I thought that setting would be easy, then I got a good map. Alaska is enormous! Lol

  5. I’m all about Alaska since that’s where six of my grandchildren live (with their parents). The Great Alone was another Alaska thriller that I couldn’t put down. I’m anxious to read this!

I loved the setting of beauty and danger in Alaska. They had to trust in each other and God. Sounds like a great read.
