Havoc

HAVOC by Ronie Kendig
SERIES: A Breed Apart: Legacy #1
GENRE: Paramilitary Romantic Thriller (Christian)
PUBLISHER: Sunrise Publishing
RELEASE DATE: October 17, 2023
PAGES: 299

A soldier, a Malinois, and a stuntwoman walk onto a TV set . . .

Former Special Forces operator Sergeant Crew Gatlin takes everything in stride, even the career-ending incident that separated him from the Army, half a leg, and his beloved working dog, Havoc K027. Putting his life back together and lying low, he takes a job with A Breed Apart and is unexpectedly reunited with Havoc. It’s too good to be true—and the proof is in their first assignment: to work as a K-9 team for a television drama in Los Angeles. Miffed at being relegated to TV fodder, he’s willing to pay the price when he sees the stuntwoman.

Being a stunt double allows Vienna Foxcroft to fulfill her acting dream—with a side of MMA—and stay out of the limelight. The same one that plagued her childhood and put her through a nightmare scenario. Now, her tight-knit stunt team are the only ones she trusts. Then in walks Mr. Mountain-of-Muscle and his tough-as-nails dog, and Vienna has a bad feeling her life is about to turn upside down.

Ticked as they head overseas for a location shoot in Turkey, Crew guts it up—after all, he has Havoc again. Okay, and yeah—Vienna is going, too. When an attack sends the cast fleeing into the streets of Turkey, Vienna must face the demons of her past or be devoured by them. And Crew and Havoc are tested like never before.

Experience the high-octane thrill ride that is the first book in the A Breed Apart: Legacy series.

My Favorite Lines/Scenes from Havoc

by Ronie Kendig, author of Havoc

I love this one because Crew says this tongue-in-cheek, maybe not quite realizing how hard he’s already fallen for the heroine:

Crew let out a quiet whistle. “You got a preacher on set?”

Greene frowned. “I . . . I don’t think so. Why?”

“Cuz I’m going to marry her.”

The PA twitched. Scoffed. “Well, good luck. She hates men.”

Undeterred, Crew smirked and indicated to Havoc. “Why do you think I brought him?”

For the new A Breed Apart: Legacy series, I ensured the military working dogs were as much characters as the two-legged characters. This sort of shows it, and I love the bond between these two.

“You’re a piece of work, you know that? Snarl at every Tom, Dick, and Baako, but Wonder Woman you cozy up to while my back is turned.” He shook his head. Havoc’s shouldering into the stuntwoman had been repeated every chance the maligator got to be around her.

The narrow head finally swiveled to him as Havoc licked his chops.

“But no, you had to get up in her face and lick her. Act like you aren’t the killing machine I made you into.” He snorted, still thinking about how she’d nailed the acting and stunts. So fluid and confident. “Flippin’ traitor. But let’s get this clear: I saw her first.”

Crew is a pretty intense guy but he’s also laidback, rolls with the punches. That created a lot of fun banter, like in this scene, where they’re running from terrorists.

“Run! Toward the docks.” He broke into a sprint. “Right.” Veered in that direction. “Right!” Down an alley. Diverted behind a tenement building. “Slow slow slow,” he murmured, drawing her to the side and into the shadows.

Breathing labored, she gulped air. Her gaze skated to the side, monitoring him, his position. Adjusting as he moved.

Crew took her hand. “Just two lovebirds out for an evening walk.” He was glad for the darkening day.

“Enjoying the humidity and odor of spent bullets.”

“Talking my love language, girl.”

This next one pretty much defines Crew, Vienna, and Havoc. They all have their strengths, and they trust each other to handle it. They’re on equal footing, even if one is struggling with something, and I think this shows it. This is immediately after a very intense tactical scene where Vienna had to put her MMA to real-world use for the first time, and it hits her hard. He gives her the time to work through it and process, which meets her needs on several levels and teaches her a lot about the man who becomes an anchor in the storms of life.

It was better to keep moving, to get away from the bodies. Get to safe ground. He took them up a couple more streets, then banked right. Put at least two klicks between them and the men. Found a spot in an alley where they could wait out the trouble. He positioned Foxtrot behind him, Havoc at a heel, and peered between a van and a closed shop down the incline to the Çırağan Hotel. Watched emergency vehicle lights blur toward the hotel. The telltale sound of gunfire died out.

At his back, Foxtrot’s breathing shuddered. He felt her hands on his back. Then her nose to his spine. Then a chill as her touch vanished. He heard her thump softly against the wall. Fabric dragged. A quick check showed her sliding down to a crouch. Her sobs deepened.

Weapon ready but aimed down, gaze on the chaos at the Çırağan, he let her cry. Let her process and grieve the life she’d taken. Ached for her, knowing what that first kill was like. Grieving was good. She needed to work through it. And though he’d do anything to undo what had happened, to remove from her the burden of having taken a life, he knew she didn’t need him up in her business, babying her. She just needed room to grieve.
