Amish Holiday #3

When Promise Glen is struck by a vandalism spree around the Thanksgiving holiday, a community’s values—and two weathered hearts—are put to the test.

As a widow with two-year-old twins and a struggling orchard, Rebecca King’s dreams of expanding her business seem near impossible. To make matters worse, a troublesome string of destructive acts around Promise Glen threatens her roadside fruit and vegetable stand, forcing Rebecca to accept the help of her condescending new neighbor, Nathan Mueller.

Nathan didn’t intend to offend Rebecca with his offer to share the stand, especially since he’s a widower and single parent himself. He admires Rebecca’s strength and kindness in the face of adversity. If only they hadn’t started off on the wrong foot…

Despite their best efforts to shield their hearts, working side by side through the busy harvest plants the seeds of a budding friendship. But when the vandalism spreading through Promise Glen escalates to arson and rumors blaze through the town, they’ll have to learn to rely on each other more than ever. As Thanksgiving approaches, Rebecca and Nathan are forced to reconcile with their own grief, forgive what can’t be changed, and come to truly understand the core values of the holiday: love and gratitude.

I always enjoy a visit to the quaint community of Promise Glen, courtesy of Marta Perry’s skilled storytelling, and I’m happy to report that Thanksgiving Blessing is just as charming as its cover! Those adorable twins you see there – Joanna and James – are an adorable handful, and their antics filled the book with humor and affection.

Becca King is a young widow left to raise those two toddlers without her husband, but she’s not without support. Her family lives across the road, her teenage sister helps watch the twins (and Becca’s farmstand), and their grandmother lives with Becca on the orchard that was once her own. I loved grossmammi – she embodies wisdom and love, all with a twinkle in her eye and a gentle spirit. I loved Becca too. She has an admirable inner strength, a soft heart despite the painful loss of her husband, and a forgiving nature. She is such a genuinely nice character that you can’t help but wish you were her neighbor.

Speaking of… Nathan Mueller and his teenage brother Peter do have the good fortune of living next ‘farm’ to Becca, and while their friendship with Becca & her family is quick and easy it’s not all smooth sailing. Namely because Nathan is still grappling with his own losses and adjusting to his new role as father figure for his brother. For his own part, Peter is working through some hurt, too. It was really sweet to watch Becca, her twins, her siblings, and even her grandmother begin to bandage up the two wounded Mueller souls, just by extending unconditional friendship and needing the same in return. I appreciated how Becca and Nathan helped each other, sharing each other’s burdens long before anything more than friendly respect solidifies between them. And while there are definite sparks of attraction that lead to love (this is a romance, after all), it’s still their friendship I enjoyed the most. (Don’t get me wrong though – I loved the romance too lol)

Bottom Line: Thanksgiving Blessing by Marta Perry gently reminds us to count our blessings and step out in faith when we’re afraid to trust that God knows best. The sweet love story between Becca and Nathan is like a warm embrace, and the character growth from main as well as supporting characters just makes your heart feel good. More than one subplot advances the plot, including a dash of danger that has readers waiting for the next shoe to drop throughout the book. This is another cozy visit to Promise Glen with characters you’ll love and a story that comforts even as it entertains.

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)
