“A sure bet for a kid-tested, puppy-approved storytime.”– Kirkus reviews

Busy Betty has always been busy. Every day she wakes up with a million questions and a billion ideas! And today she has an amazing idea: she’s throwing her mom a birthday party. Shhh . . . It’s a surprise!

Then Betty and her best friend, Mae, have the best idea of all: What if they threw Mom a circus surprise party?! It will be the greatest day in the history of the universe!

Everything is perfect until Betty realizes—oh, no!—Mom’s birthday isn’t today . . . it’s next month. Whatever will they do with their circus surprise now?

Reese Witherspoon’s Busy Betty is an exuberant, smart, and larger-than-life character who encourages young readers to tackle each obstacle with enthusiasm, excitement, and big ideas.

Other Books In This Series

My favorite picture books are the kind in which the illustrations make the text even more delightful, whether through introducing additional details or enhancing emotions in some way. In other words, the illustrations make the funny, funnier or the cute, cuter or the sweet, sweeter. Busy Betty & the Circus Surprise by Reese Witherspoon and Xindi Yan is one such book.

Busy Betty (thusly named because she wakes up every day with a MILLION questions and a BILLION ideas) wants to do something special to celebrate her mom’s birthday. Her two best friends (Mae and Jeffery) and her longsuffering dog (Frank) are on hand to help, and it’s not long before Betty decides they should make a ‘humongous, tremendous, stupendous’ circus. What transpires is messy, endearing, and hilarious. It could be a great jumpstart for little imaginations, or a trip down memory lane for anyone who has ever created a tent fortress in their living room with sheets and blankets, or acted out a grand play or a great battle in the backyard with homemade props/costumes.

Bottom Line: In Busy Betty & the Circus Surprise, Reese Witherspoon’s fun and endearing story pairs perfectly with Xindi Yan’s adorable illustrations. The entertaining combination is sure to produce lots of giggles from young readers and the adults who love them. I thought each page was so cute, and I loved Betty, her friends, and her parents. The way it all works out is perfect, and what a gentle lesson for parents, too. However, my absolute favorite part of this book is Frank, Betty’s begrudging dog. Yan’s subtle commentary on how Frank feels about all the goings-on had me chuckling through the whole book!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4 stars / loved it!
