Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Kari: Slinging words on a screen. I’m really good at getting words on a page and rarely get writer’s block which is why I’ll write a book very quickly, then take more time to edit it.
Carrie: that’s an awesome superpower for an author to have 🙂
Q: Which books are “on your nightstand”?
Kari: My nightstand is currently overflowing… I have 2 versions of the Bible, Becca Syme’s The Author Stuck List, God’s Power Unleashed by Jennifer Courtney, Code Talker by Chester Nez, and The Vanishing at Castle Moreau by Jamie Jo Wright.
Carrie: I’ve only read Jaime’s book from your list (well… other than the Bible lol) but it’s AMAZING!
Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?
Kari: I posted about this recently on social media. Since I write a lot of suspense, I find myself needing to know information that’s not readily available. I had to Google (because you can’t assume) how many liters of blood are in the average child and how much it differs from an adult. Yes, I used the information for a story.
Carrie: oh wow – how difficult was that to find? I can’t imagine there are a lot of articles about it.
Q: Which of your characters has been the most difficult to write?
Kari: I have 2 of them, but I’ll use the book that’s been released, not the one I’m writing now. Esther from An Uncommon Beauty is an African American woman. She has a history I’ve never had and experienced things I never will. That makes her profoundly different from me. One could argue that many of my characters are different from me, since they lived over a hundred years before I was born, but this was a unique difficulty. I found her more difficult to write than any other minority character I’ve tried to portray (and I do like diversity in my fiction, which is why I try very hard to include a diverse cast where I can).
Carrie: That makes me want to meet Esther all the more!
Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote Deadly Yellowstone Secrets?
Kari: Patience. I am not generally a patient author. I write a book, I edit the book and buy a cover, then I put the book up for sale. With this book… I wrote it in 2020-early 2021, it went through 4 editors each with a rewrite, then it had to wait its turn in the lineup. All these steps take time that I’m not used to taking. I didn’t die in the process, so God is a faithful teacher.
Carrie: haha yes He is

Kari: I am continuing to write the Wayside Ranch series which focuses on shedding light on the devastation that is human trafficking, though I do it gently wrapped in a romantic suspense filled with cowboys and second chance romance. So far, readers are enjoying it and I’m happy to give them more.
