“Sophia. Where are you?” Hadley demanded as she pressed past him.

A cool gust of wind blew across the room, sending a chill up Ryan’s spine. The emergency escape window showed signs of having been pried open.

“Sophia!” Hadley cried and tried to brush past him.

“No. You can’t go rushing out there, you’ll get yourself killed. Stay—” He’d almost said Stay here but that wouldn’t work. The shooter could circle back while he was out trying to find Sophia and get Hadley, too.

“You have to come with me. I can’t leave you here unprotected.”

“You better believe I’m coming with you.”

“Listen.” He grasped her upper arms and forced her to look at him. “The only way I can protect you and Sophia is if you follow my orders. Got it? If you rush out there recklessly, it could get you killed—”

“I don’t care. I’ve got to—”

“Yes, you do. You don’t want to leave Sophia without a mother. And if you do anything reckless, you could jeopardize her life, too.” She visibly blanched, and he knew his words had had the desired effect.

He reached behind his back for his gun, tucked into its holster in his waistband and headed for the door. “They can’t have gotten far. Let’s go.”
