favorite Christmas memories

by Sarah Hamaker, author of Holiday Menace

Is it too early to talk about Christmas? No? Great!

I love hearing about favorite Christmas memories, and am blessed myself to have several from which to choose. For me, two Christmases stand out in a childhood of many (we won’t talk about the Christmas when I had the stomach bug…).

When I was eight, I came downstairs to find my dad had built me a doll house, which my mother furnished and decorated, knitting tiny rugs, sewing curtains and bedclothes, and wallpapering the rooms. It was simply wonderful (and yes, the dollhouse still exists and my own girls played with it for hours on end when they visited my parents’ home).

Christmas Cold Case by Sarah Hamaker Holiday MenaceAnother memorable childhood Christmas happened when I was around 10. Every morning in the week or so leading up to December 25, I awoke to find one of my 12-inch dolls (the American Girl dolls of my generation) dressed in a new outfit my mother had sewn. Each day, the outfits grew more and more elaborate, culminating in a wedding dress complete with veil and satin slippers.

The latter memory is one that enchanted me so much I decided to recreate it for my own girls when they were 5 and 7 years old. My mom had saved my 12-inch dolls (Mandy and Jenny dolls from Fischer Price) and all their clothing. I decided to give my girls these dolls to play with, but kept back most of the clothing.

Now that each girl had her own doll, I spirited them away each evening and dressed them in a new outfit and accompanied by a short story I wrote for that particular day’s adventure. For nine days, they greeted mornings with happy smiles and squeals of joy, with Christmas Day the culmination of this surprise with the dolls dressed in gloriously frilly wedding-type attire.

Now that I’ve shared some of my favorite Christmas memories, I’d love to hear what are some of your favorite Christmas memories?
