Families were complicated. She was running late. In a nutshell, the story of her life.

Buffeted by a brisk November wind, Kelsey Summerfield hurried down the sidewalk. Outside the Mason Jar Café, she reached for the door. A man’s calloused fingertips brushed against her hand. Sparks electrified her nerve endings.

“I’m sor—” Her lip curled. “Oh, it’s you.”

Clay’s hazel eyes narrowed. “Oh, it’s you.”

Last week, she’d driven over from Asheville to meet her widowed grandfather’s new friend, cattle-ranch matriarch Dorothy McKendry. She’d also met Dorothy’s grandson, Clay. She and the cowboy had taken a mutual dislike to each other.

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Grampy is expecting me for lunch.”

Kelsey liked tall men, but not overly tall men. From her five foot four perspective, at six two Clay McKendry was definitely overly tall.

“I’m meeting Nana Dot for lunch.” He reached for the door again. As did she.

Their hands touched, setting off another round of electricity. Like a scalded cat, she snatched her hand away. “I can open my own doors, thank you very much,” she hissed.

She rubbed her still-tingling palm down the side of her charcoal trousers. The static electricity in the air must be off the charts today. He bowed up, crossing his arms over a massively impressive chest. Not that she was impressed. She disliked barrel-chested men.

“Opening a door for a woman is about being a gentleman.” He smirked. “Your constitutional rights are in no danger from me, I assure you.”

What she wouldn’t give to wipe the self-satisfied smile off his stupid, cowboy face.

Some women loved cowboys. There was no accounting for taste. Most women probably found him ruggedly handsome and winsomely appealing.

He had the whole square-jaw, straight-nose, firm-lipped, strong-white-even-teeth thing going for him. He didn’t look bad in jeans, either. But she wasn’t most women. And she wasn’t remotely, in this lifetime, on this planet interested in him.
