The Complicated History of Mistletoe
by Macie St. James, author of Kissed By Her Ex
Have you ever kissed under the mistletoe?
If you haven’t, you’ve probably seen it depicted in a movie. It’s a character of its own in my Misty Mountain Mistletoe series. But nobody’s really sure how the plant became associated with Christmas kisses.
Many historians believe mistletoe’s reputation began in the first century. The Celtic Druids saw mistletoe as sacred merely because of its ability to grow even during the chilliest winter months. They even used it as a tool to restore fertility in both animals and humans.
This association with virility continued throughout the Middle Ages, but it wasn’t until the 1800s that it became a prominent part of Christmas celebrations. The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is believed to have begun among servants in England and later spread to the middle classes.
The earliest version of the tradition said that a man could kiss a woman as long as she was standing under the mistletoe. Refusing his advances was said to bring bad luck. Another tradition had each man stealing a berry from a sprig of mistletoe. Once the berries were gone, no further kisses were allowed.
The name “mistletoe” has interesting origins. It’s a combination of the Anglo-Saxon names for “dung” (mistle) and “twig” (tan). In ancient times, the belief was that mistletoe grew from bird droppings since it often grew on twigs where birds left them.
While mistletoe doesn’t have magical powers, after all, it’s spread plenty of magic over the years. Whether you merely use it for decoration or you hang it hoping for a kiss, mistletoe is a great addition to your holiday festivities.
So have a kiss under the mistletoe this holiday season, and honor a tradition that goes back centuries.
