Happy Friday & welcome to the First Line Friday link-up! It’s time to grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line. Today I’m continuing all things Christmas & featuring the first line of While Shepherds Watch Are Keeping by Susanne Dietze! I love this author’s books, though I’m woefully behind, and this one looks so good! It’s a re-release from a previous novella collection but I managed to miss that one the first go-around so I’m eager to read it for the first time all by itself!

While Shepherds Watch Are Keeping by Susanne Dietze

and the first line of While Shepherds Watch Are Keeping is…

The moment the final notes of the closing hymn fell silent, a gust of wind whistled through one of the church’s stained-glass windows and snaked down the Reverend Seth Shepherd’s neck.

Massachusetts, 1899

This Christmas, Pastor Seth Shepherd has little to offer his flock of congregants in their time of need until Jessalyn Grant, a mysterious newcomer, comes to his aid.

(And here’s what the author said about it on Facebook – It’s the historical-set story of a pastor, his troubled congregation, and a visitor with an heirloom nativity scene that she’ll loan to the church for Christmas Eve. Opposites attract here, in that the hero and heroine, Seth and Jessalyn, are heading in totally different directions! Love isn’t possible…or is it?)

I got “A Christmas Courtship” by Shelley Shepard Gray out of my local library. It looks like a great read and I’m glad that they had it in their collection. The first line is: “If Sarah Anne Miller Canon ever decided to write down a list of things she thought would never happen, being a newlywed at age sixty-two would be at the top.”

Sergeant Daria Gordon cruised her hometown of Kimbleton, Missouri, one last time before she headed back to the police station to clock out.

Conquergood was born in the year – but he does not remember the year of his birth – but he does remember that twelve years ago in the year 2171, at the age of five or six or seven, he awoke to the City of Old York, of no family, good nor ill nor otherwise. – Conquergood & the Center of the Intelligible Mystery of Being, CG Fewston

Thank you so much for reading and sharing, Carrie! I’m honored! I hope you like the story.

“Can I have four turtles? So they don’t get lonely?” I’m reading Allie Pleiter’s His Christmas Wish!
