this is christmas

by Jessica R. Patch, author of Crime Scene Conspiracy

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… but what exactly does that mean? Snow? If so, us down here in the South are in big trouble. A big family gathering with a house full of people? If so, then many of us who have lost loved ones or have family rifts are in trouble.

Christmas, as we Christians know, is about a dedicated time when we celebrate Christ’s coming. We marvel at His obedience to come to earth wrapped in human flesh and vulnerability knowing it wasn’t to be served but serve others and do it faithfully and perfectly, only to die a criminal’s death. A gruesome death. Every single step of the way, He lived knowing he was going to suffer and die.

This is Christmas. This is why we write Christmas books. We love to write stories of snowy weather and warm cozy fires. We love family gatherings but the truth is many of us in real life do not have those things. But we long for it because we’re meant to long for family and gathering and perfect settings. God has placed eternity in our hearts and with that comes the deep longing for gathering with the family in Christ, being with loved ones, and seeing our Father and Jesus face to face. It will be a perfect place and atmosphere with no sorrow, grief, loss or pain. No more tears or heartache but eternal joy.

I hope this Christmas season, you feel that eternal pull, that longing to be home and it fills you with joy regardless of your earthly predicaments and situations. In the meantime, enjoy all the delightful Christmas books. Even in Crime Scene Conspiracy with all the ho-ho-homicide you’ll find a family who fights and bickers but loves bigger. You’ll find old traditions and new as things do change. And you’ll find togetherness at Christmastime.

May your holidays be merry and bright.
